I hate to jump back in like this, but:
...if you tell me how to extract all the jap text from each of the files i can easily translate all the texts in to english...
Look josh, the thing is, if you managed to pull this off, the game would be an engrish mess, almost nothing would make any sense, and you would finish it after nintendo released the real english game.

Damnit guys. Keep the discussion with the topic. If you guys want to poke fun at each-other even though it's horribly rude of either of you guys to do so since you don't even know each-other, that's fine. Do it in a different topic.

This topic should only be about the process of translating Zelda PH to English.

What is the translation program you are talking about? There are professional sites that offer full translations but they cost thousands for the amount of text that zelda will contain. Thats why the flames have been lit. They dont use software, They are translated by a human which takes time

The programs called multitranse something the only reason i thought it was good because i typed a sentence from the game into it and it came out in good english. no words were the wrong way round the sentence was perfectly readable

I appreciate your attempt to suggest solutions for translating. I tried out the program and it's unfortunately not too helpful in all cases. Translating the line:

??????? in Multitranse gave me "The ? ? ? like this the boat"

Unfortunately language translation software just isn't as good as human translators because the logic and semantics of language translation isn't algorithmic. There's a lot of improvisation and interpretation required in translating from a language like Japanese to a language like English, both with very different grammar patterns. As such, the true translation of

??????? is
Heavy Industrial Boat

Like I said, I appreciate your attempt to help out, but to make the claim that it can do translations perfectly based on one line of translation you did through the program is a little too quick to conclusions

Actually it's highly recommended to extract.

Basically the process is something like this:
- Check if there's an English font in the game (there probably is)
- Create a table file (file with what each hex digit translates to in the game)
- Using a script dumping program (e.g. Atlus) dump the script (the text)
- Get the script translated
- Test in the game (optional)
- Edit script
- Insert the script into the game
- Test the game
- Fix errors
- More testing

Of course there's more extra working depending on the game.
- Edit the graphics that contain Japanese text (e.g menus)
- Modify the text routines so it produces smaller font text (most Japanese games have the text in quite big letters)
- Implement VWF so the font looks nicer
- Test the new routines work

Oh and all this is usually done during free time

Basically it's a lot of work, and the game is going to come out in August.

All credit goes to Xcomp for this one on Gamebrink.com but he has just released a Zelda Phantom Hourglass English Translation Guide. Now I wonder if that one guy who attempted to change the .BMG files in the messages using DSLazy could do it with this translation. That would be a milestone. But if not, this guide would feed all of our hungry needs to play the japanese version of this game.
