Not sure if this has been discussed before

But I noticed that in both games aside of the regular shadow that is being cast by the sun or other light sources there is also a soft shadow around entire characters. Not all the time though but in many instances it appears and makes it look like a cheap Photoshop effect and looks rather odd.

Why is this? Did Nintendo think it makes the characters more stand out? Because to me this is unnecessary.

Not sure if you can see it well in this compressed screenshot but there's a soft shadow that's around entire Link character and also happens on other characters in the game in certain perspectives.

Also often when the camera has Link in frame in front of a background structure like the floor or wall or mountain stones he's climbing on.

The shadow really makes it look cheap and like a bad shadow effect and not a physically correct one that should only happen in contact of a surface.

Lol. It's called Ambient Occlusion.
That's not really ambient occlusion. And it doesn't just happen when he's standing right next to a wall.

Besides AC would cause proper contact shadows with fallow and not uniform shadow effect like in the image.

Anyway, it's just a detail that bothers me because I don't like it when this shadow effect/ soft blur around characters happens but it's not a big deal either.

I think I understand what you mean though I've only begun playing BotW and haven't noticed it until now. Will post a more self explanatory screenshot if I notice the gfx artifact op is talking about
