I started with regular homebrew with ironhax, using emulators, custom themes, etc back in October, after stumbling upon a youtube guide for menuhax, and clicking on the link for gbatemp in the description. I was hyped.I want this thread to be like a life telling experience (tell me if it is in the wrong subforum), about how you discovered cfw and what have you done until now (good and bad things equal).
So i think ill start:
Well i got a black o3ds on release and got into tubehax a couple months after it was released and used to brag about me playing megaman x in front of my friends jealous eyes, tubehax broke and i cried(because i couldnt buy a cubic ninja since im from costa rica).
Months passed and a friend sent me a pm where he sent a beutiful post with browserhax and since then ive used oothax, ninjahax, browserhax and installed a whole bunch of a9lh (i have a crush with a9lh).
So whats your cfw story?

Lol. I remember having to install Tubehax with a Goodwill store's wifi because my ISP wouldn't let me use the DNS XDlol back when Tubehax was just released and was an actual exploit and not just a DNS sever-blocker
I remember having to remember the DNS' number off of the top of my head so I could play Pokemon Adventure (lol GameYob 3DS) at church.Lol. I remember having to install it on a Goodwill store's wifi because my ISP wouldn't let me use the DNS XD
You obviously don't know the magic that is PlaiSysUpdater.not trying that shit again.
I first got into the scene back in January, and when I was looking up 3DS hardware mods on youtube, I saw a tutorial for Browserhax, and I was like "cool what is this I'mma try it". So then I started with Browserhax. The latest update at the time was 10.3.0, so after that, I installed Menuhax. After they were patched temporarily on 10.4, I stayed on 10.3 for a while. Then, I got oot3dhax and started going to all of the latest firmwares, up to 10.6. Then the real stuff started. When the new ARM11 exploit came out, I downgraded to 9.2, and set up a ReiNand CFW EmuNand. I stayed on that for a while, until I made the plunge into getting a9lh. It was so worth it.I want this thread to be like a life telling experience (tell me if it is in the wrong subforum), about how you discovered cfw and what have you done until now (good and bad things equal).

Do it, but follow Plailect's guide (it's 99.9% noob and brick free), and keep your 3DS the fuck away from your friends. Seriously though. The only people who have bricked on Plailect's guide are the ones who didn't follow the directions properly.Had a Dream Team edition 3DS XL, downgraded to 9.2. It was great, couldn't access the eshop tho, and setting up cfw was a pain in the ass. My friend updated it without my knowledge, after I told him what I did. I tried to downgrade again and while doing so, I got a system error. Bricked, R.I.P.
Now I have a red New 3DS XL, not trying that shit again. I learned my lesson. (I don't even have that much SD card space anyway)

Do you still have the Brickwait? This should prolly get moved to the Flashcarts and Custom Firmwares subforum.
My time with the 3DS CFW/Flashcarts/Hax/Exploits stuff was a lot of lurking, punctuated by bouts of frustration, and capped off with a frenzy of downgrading, upgrading, and triumph.
And at the end of the day, the sad part is that I was super happy with Spiderhax. Oh, it was super limited, required a web browser, and involved a painful amount of screwing around with my SD card, but it did most everything that I wanted: messing with Pokemon.
So here's how the "saga" went:
As of last week: I have a hacked New 3DS XL with A9LH, AuReiNAND on 10.7, and everything set up in a nigh-perfect configuration with a 64GB micro SD (with 64K clusters for increased performance). Along with a battered but functional O3DS XL with A9LH, AuReiNAND on 10.7, and everything set up in a night-perfect configuration with a 32GB SD card. Once again, I am giddy with excitement and power.
- Kept upgrading past Gateway-compatible firmware right before they announced it.
- Blue balled by Smealum after he revealed secret Pokemon on X and Y. We knew it could be done, but we didn't know how.
- Caved and got a Powersaves. Save scumming now possible, but super limited. Also, paranoid about using the device much since it used to have a small risk of bricking your fucking cartridge
- Project Pokemon folks figure out how to inject saves with Powersaves. As soon as they publicly release the method, Datel, fearing increased sales and customer satisfaction, immediately patch their system with great prejudice.
- Cybergadget editor comes out, is only compatible with Japanese hardware. Refuse to blow that much money on something so dumb.
- Spiderhax comes out. QR Pokemon injection now possible.
- I proceed to become giddy and drunk with power.
- Spiderhax continues to be awesome by way of firmware spoofing. Can continue accessing eshop and Pokebank without giving up my beautiful browser exploits.
- 3DS XL begins to show signs of wear and tear. Hinge begins to crack, and gets worse with time. Circle pad breaks, leaving painful nub in its wake.
- I look into repairing my system, realize I'll probably fuck up my system.
- Solution: buy a new system once the New 3DS (the name that drove 1,000 retail salespeople mad) drives prices of the old system down, use Spiderhax to do a system transfer while staying at magical hacking land.
- Prices stubbornly remain high.
- Nintendo surprises with moment of technical competence, changing things server-side to prevent firmware spoofing.
- Fuck.
- Seriously, I have no excuse for being so lazy.
- Am now left without immediate way of getting data to a new system, and my Pokebank subscription is about to expire in a few months.
- To reiterate: I literally allowed Nintendo to hold my Pokemon hostage.
- Rather than give up my precious hax, I save up some money, and do something I'm not proud of: I bought a Gatewait. A Brickway.
- I'm sorry
- Brickway proves surprisingly useful. Still not proud of owning it.
- Throughout this, custom firmware progresses from incomprehensible buggy garbage to relatively stable and versatile software.
- Ninjahax (which I had ignored due to Cubic Ninja getting gobbled up) gets updates and entrypoints with browserhax and menuhax.
- memchunkhax becomes a reality, and with it, downgrades for everyone.
- Overall: smealum completely makes up for prior blue-balling.
- Finally find a really good sale on a new system.
- Update, system transfer, downgrade, and Cakes CFW on my new 3ds.
- Restore emuNAND backup on old system, now I have all of my data on two systems (unnecessary with signature patches, but still felt kinda fun to give the finger to Nintendo).
- Arm9 Loader Hax becomes a thing, along with AuReiNAND. Plailect and company make OTP and installation super easy and safe.
Do you still have the Brickwait?
Depending on the price you could give it to me.I do. I should sell it. Maybe give it away. I mean, it still has Gateshark I suppose. Granted, between NTR save editing and plugins, that functionality too can be replaced, and it is only a matter of time before this too is rendered obsolete. I dunno.
