um i got past the error by extracting all the files again to my SD card but it still won't start i get a warning about the EXT3 partition is a read only system. Then 1 min later i get a green screen and then i get a shutdown counter

For some season, X starts and then directly quits again.
This could mean there's an error in your installation. Did you use the exact tar command specified in the whiite installation instructions ?

Other possibilities:
When you're on an NTSC wii, you might need to change some stuff in xorg.conf (see my installation notes).
If you're using a PAL wii, probably something else is wrong; maybe you're using a strange tv/video mode somehow ?

um i just extracted the archive with the extractor supplied in the ubuntu version i have. Didn't use any special commands. I used the instructions from chemistwolf. But i startet it a few minutes ago and i got past the green screen and then i needed to login but i don't know the password and login.

EDIT:
when i cancel the shutdown sequence i get the inlog thingy on which i can't login

i had this problem delete all the files in the ext3 partition and redownload it and extract them to it again .

It sounds to me like it was incorrectly unmounted or it was a bad filesystem to start with.

I would try re-making the partition or re-extracting the filesystem.

And hi bertjan (username from #wiihelp/wiidev)

ok so i'm doing it right by just extracting the debian-etch-4.0+whiite-0.1=xwhiite-0.1.tar.bz2 to my ext3 partition?

OK... this stuff is WAY out of my league. May someone PLEASE,

1) link us to some type of software we can use to partition our SD cards

2) create a STEP by STEP noob friendly guide on how to use Wii Linux
go to www.ubuntu.com download the iso and burn it to a cd with IMGburn,nero,ect...
put it in your cd drive and reboot your pc and it should ask if you want to try ubuntu click it.incert the sd card and unmount it(after having backed up everything in windows first.)
go to system>>administration>>partition editor.
go to the sd media(not you hard drive it will be the drive the size of your sd card.
right click and delete the current partitions.
click the check mark with apply on it wait for it to finish.
format half the sd card of what ever amount you need for your normal HBC files to fat16 right click new partition select the amount and of space you want and click apply and again wait for the changes to finish.
make a EXT3 partition big enough to hold Xwhiite and do the same you did with the other (but select ext3 as format not fat16) and click apply.
now name the fat16 partition boot and the ext3 partition whiite right click label and type in the appropriate name for each partition then click apply.
take out the sd and put it back in make sure the partitions are mounted and are named properly
now go into your open the "debian-etch-4.0+whiite-0.1+xwhiite-0.1.tar.bz2" file open it with Archive manager.
unzip all the files into the whiite file system.( if it says you don't have privileges to do so open apps>>accessories>>terminal and type gksudo nautilus and try from within that).
make a "apps" folder then a folder called "wii-linux" in side that folder now put "zImage-2.6.27b-whiite.elf" in it and rename it boot.elf
now it should load from HBC beta9.

I'm in the partition editor but it wont let me delete the current partition on my SD card. There is a symbol with a pair of keys beside it so im assuming that Ubuntu thinks my card is locked but Its not and I tried both my 1 and 2 gig cards and still get the same result

Ubuntu doesn't think it's locked.
It knows its mounted.
Right click and choose "Unmount"

so basically, I cant partition a sd card while it's mounted? ... Sorry if i sound a bit stupid, Of all the operating systems, Linux is one I have not messed with so to me this is a learning experience

I may even sound more n00b... why the hell can't I access the partition manager? I could when I used Ubuntu with the cd in windows.. but when I actually made Ubuntu a dual os.. it now won't show the partition disk option under Administration... and I am the only user on the system... wtf?! I got into it before...but just said to myself... I may try and learn some linux stuff so i will just add it on and use about 15gbs of my c drive to experiment with ubuntu...anyways... any takers on help with this?

Sorry if this is slightly off topic...but I really wanna see this Whitelinux Wii hack work for me....it gives me quite a few benefits to just pass it by...

Man... now I am trying to use Wolffangelchemist's guide to doing the actual partitioning... I have created a 200+ mb partition as fat16 and one ext3 (700mb) and it did that...but I am having trouble trying to name the fat16 boot and the ext3 partition whiite...
I don't see where it will let me have the option to name them... then I went to try and extract the debian-etch-4.0+whiite-0.1+xwhiite-0.1.tar.bz2 to the 700mb ext3 partition...it gives me an error.... what the hell am I doing wrong? do I need to unmount that partition first?
I am sooooo..... not there...but want to be... Please help a brother out!?

i sent you a PM but i'll post here as well incase someone else runs into this problem right click the partition and you will see list thaqt has the option to label click that and label it.
EDIT: and the error while extracting is cuz your not super user type "gksudo nautilus" in terminal then a browsing window will pop up navigate to the folder containing the "debian-etch-4.0+whiite-0.1+xwhiite-0.1.tar.bz2" file and open it from within that window it should let you extract it to the whiite partition with out errors now.

Hmm.... I am still having some difficulties.. is it maybe that my SD cards are just so played out? They are sorta delicate when it comes to sticking them in out of that card slot constantly... anyways.. I will not give up without a good fight... it has to be done.

Thanks for the help... if all else fails I will just wait until there is a Windows way of doing it that is just as good.... I am just not real familiar with all the linux vocabulary and being able to relate it to what Windows calls the same action.

Ubuntu wont let me put anything on my whiite partition. The damn thing keeps telling me that i dont have any permission to do it. I tried moving the files from one partition to the other (only the "boot" partition was accessible from windows so i droped the files there and went back to ubuntu to transfer files), then i tried placing the archive on a flash drive and just extract the archive from my flash drive to my SD card and it still tells me that i dont have proper permission. What should i do?

do the "gksudo nautilus" in terminal type your password and open the file from with the now window it pops up then it will work.

Just did that, that's why I said nevermind

On a side note I wish this thing had support for SDHC cards. This would make my Wii the perfect (low end) backup PC
