Been lurking for a while now, saw some of the worse-er parts of the flaming that occurred. I don't come here with the intent to troll, but I just want to offer my two cents: It's hard to translate and localize something. There's cultural nuances that have to be adapted, names and terminology that has to be changed. Localization is more involved than just translating words and transcribing names. These people have to come up with names that make sense in all of their target languages at the same time.
At the same time, I understand the opposite point of view. I'm very acutely aware of political correctness and unnecessary censorship. I hate it as much as anybody else. But that doesn't mean all localization is instantly terrible. Can we at least concede that a 1:1 version of the original script doesn't always work? That's not only unfeasible, if done it would make the script clunky as Hell. Not to mention some things only working in one language or another. Any good localizer would translate something so that it's understandable while keeping similar meaning.
Let's all try and be respectful of each other's preferences. Be good people, forum-goers, and don't blindly dismiss those who prefer the localization patch.
Downloaded the mod btw
Honestly, it’s kind of hilarious to see someone write a passive-aggressive lecture about 'let’s be respectful,' while the post itself is dripping with condescension. You’re asking for respect in the same breath as you show basically none to the original creators and their culture.
And no, I’m not going to 'concede' that heavy alteration is some noble necessity. Changing names, swapping cultural context, sanding off edges, or censoring anything because 'it won’t land in the target language' is basically rewriting. In 2025 we have more exposure to other cultures than ever - people can handle unfamiliar honorifics, jokes, or social norms.
Treating the audience like they’re too fragile or too clueless to understand the source material is the narrow-minded part (and for some reason it affects almost exclusively Japanese culture). It shrinks the work into whatever the localizer thinks is 'acceptable,' and that’s bad on principle.
Name changes especially are a huge red flag. Replacing them to 'make sense everywhere at once' is basically telling the author their choices don’t matter. Let's not forget about extreme dissonance (hearing different names and reading made up ones). That’s not translation, that’s cultural flattening. Same with any form of censorship. It doesn’t 'help comprehension,' it just removes what someone decided you shouldn’t see. Call it what it is - vandalism of the original text. If you want to write your own story, write your own story. Don’t slap your values and culture over someone else’s and call it a service.
Also, forgive me if I don’t buy the 'Downloaded the mod btw' line. You just spent most of your post arguing that heavy altering is necessary and that faithfulness is unrealistic - which is literally the opposite of what this patch stands for. So either you didn’t download it, or you did and completely missed the point.
People can prefer whatever they want, sure. But don’t demand respect while defending the disrespectful practice of gutting someone else’s work and culture to fit a checklist.
Respect starts with the source.
