I'm looking at getting a 360 come December (price drops; my brother gets 30% off at Christmas time working at Wal Mart) and I can't for the life of me get any info on hacking or mod chips, all I can find is that one firmware hack, with no info on how to use it, and if it can play games online. What I'd really like to see if there is anything out there yet, or coming soon that will let me load games to the HDD and boot from there, and if I can play online with them. Does anyone have any info for me?

The firmware needs to be loaded onto the DVD drive using a PC.
But not all drives are supported and the later the 360 the less likely it is to work.
If these do allow you to play games online at the moment it is unlikely to stay this way after the next update.

There is a mod chip around but I don't know what it does and there isn't anything at the moment to play games from the hard drive and from what I have read, isn't likely to be anytime soon if at all.

So with the hacked firmware, I can play burnt games offline. Would I be able to play original games online? Or would Live check for modded firmware?

Well, there are two modchips.

Globe 360
NME-360

These modchips are soldered to the DVD drive.
What they allow you to do is to run backed-up games that are copied onto a Dual Layer DVD media.
360 Live games do work right now but it is unadvised to play backed-up games on Live.
You'll also need to purchase a specific DVD writer for your computer and flash its firmware with a modified firmware in order to back-up your 360 games and to write your backed-up 360 ISOs.

Hope this helped.

At the moment you are able to play on xbox live with a modded 360 using originals and copies, without any worries of getting banned, but this may change in future.

I wouldn't like to try and download the games on my current internet speed. Any news if there is any chances of something like Xbox Media Center appearing on the 360?

Well, you wouldn't have to download them.
You could rent them and then rip them onto yor computer.
Spend $30 and get Blockbusters Game Pass.
unlimited game rentals for one month.

XMC on the 360 is still far off.
Sorry.

NME is junk and there is just no need for the globe unless for some strange reason you want to run dual firmwares. As for needing a flashed dvd writer , where did that come from?. Standard writer will burn the games fine. Reading em , you either need to use your flashed xbox 360 drive hooked to the pc , or get hold of a samsung sh-d162C reader and flash with kreons modified firmware or use wxripper and hotswap , but no secrurity sector that way.

The one's that can't be done yet are the 0078FK hitachies ,but they don't seem to be in USA or Canada yet , just UK and Aus at the moment it seems. How ever I'd guess they will be in USA or Canada by december.

I think I'm going to buy a 360 right now, and then just get my money back when they drop the price, cause walmart has a 90 day return policy, and I'll just play legal games until then.

Who says they are going to drop the price in 90 days or less?

If anything I would expect a price drop around March of next year. That is the time they will be making the new CPUs and the what not.

The hack for the 360 at the moment around the firmware seems like too much of a hassle for me to bother with. I would definitely be recommending that people wait until after the November update to see if Microsoft do anything to disable this hack.
