They might have been holding back on supporting newer firmwares so that they could support a newer firmware version later instead of it being patched long ago, or until sales of the GW slowed down.
I'm pretty sure they would have released an update for newer firmware versions sooner or later anyway. It looks like Nintendo are going to stop sales of the old 3DS models soon, they're already stopping sales of the XL in Japan, so I imagine GW would have to release an update pretty soon anyway if they wanted to keep selling the flashcart.

I doubt nintendo slip up again.. and what a coincidence again that 9.2 is exploitable now right ? :S
The same way the 4.5 exploit works on 4.1 through 4.5. Besides, if nintendo was capable of fixing any weakness with the very next minor firmware update, there wouldn't even be a 4.5 exploit to begin with.

While Gateway has copied in the past, it should be noted that as a business if they can't cater to their existing customers while also bringing in new customers, they would fail. My guess is that they've had this exploit going for a while now, and have been waiting for newer hardware revisions or more competition before they announce they have it. It's just business strategy.

True, they may all be the same Company and just wanted to milk the market, or they are competitive a d GW was forced to release because:
A) the exploit is very similar to one which my get patched because of sky3ds or ssspwn.

Or
B) they needed to squash the competition and fast, but that doesn't explain why they thought sky3ds was much of a threat with the 10 game limit and announced the new 9.x exploit before Nintendo has even announced the new3ds consoles all sounds fishy to me.

A) i think that's the case here.

B) i also think that's the case here too,any competition is a threat to the sales of the gateway specially when sky3ds not only works on old consoles but it also has the entire New 3ds market with no competition, they made others clones (people who are making the sky3ds) to increase sales but here comes Gateway to spoil their party (limited party that is as i believe both sky3ds & gateway cards will not survive past 9.2 firmware unless gateway 9.2 supports emunand which it doesn't look like it does).

It feels like the GW team hold stuff back to release when competitors make a move on them.

Like allowing us to install .cias within days of the cfw leak.

Just that.

For all we know, the underground devs could be apart of teams that may be affiliated with GW and Sky. Working together/selling their found exploits to make a buck. Which could be why the exploits have been released and showcased very close to each other.

Also, business wise, it's the best move to hold your best cards until you can reach Max profit/potential/exposure. But, and a big but, when you have a competitor who has released something very similar to yours before you. Then you risk losing the market and potential hard work you have put in. This then I believe why GW released the video on 9.2 support. Because sky competition would take their market, despite them knowing both methods will be patched on the next update reducing the impact of their work.

All speculation of course.
