Nintendo sure is taking their sweet time with the next update... They have Smealum's exploit to patch, Sky3DS and Gateway to block. Needless to say, I bet Nintendo is scrambling to patch this next firmware water-tight. I wonder if they'll be able to block 1:1 hardware clones at all, especially if the 3DS carts are spoofing more than just the headers, like in the DS days.

I'm just surprised Nintendo has been so silent as of late...

That doesn't make any sense. If they found an exploit that worked on the newest firmware and nobody knew that the new 3DS was comming. There is in my mind no reason at all not to release that.
put it this way, they had the 4.x exploit all secure, there is still no real shortage of 4.x consoles, so there is no major reason to show your hand early.....lets just say nintendo released some update that really did kill off the 4.x exploit, if they also revealed their ace that would be going down too.......in these kinds of games, you dont play your hand too early and its pointless burning your whole hand for short term gain.....and it looks like it paid off, i wouldn't be surprised if gateway has had this up their sleeves for quite a while, waiting for either A) nintendo to render the 4.x exploit unusable, or B) for stocks of 4.x consoles to dry up, C) for more competition to arrive so they could blow them out of the water straight away.....whatever the reason, this kind of exploit isn't something that you just make as someone else came out with a card, this will of been a long time coming and they probably would of released it once the new3ds was launched internationally, but sky3ds kinda forced their hand a bit....any good developer knows to keep a few things back for backup purposes (ba dum tssh!)

No shortage of 4.x consoles... do you think they will sell more Gateway cards now with 9.2 support? Them holding back in wait for competitors and new hardware, I just will not believe that, because their exploit makes any competition look like shit in comparison. How could they ever render the 4.x exploit unusable (without a DeLorean)? The only reason to hold back the exploit before the N3DS was known is if A) they don't want money... There is no B).

Edit: We will know this once the exploit is released... if you are correct it will work on earlier firmwares, and here I was thinking I couldn't be more excited for the release. ;)

I agree with most of that but I wouldn't say sky3ds was a threat to them.. That's what I cant understand.

truth is exploits can take a while to flesh out, they may of known about it for a while, or it may of only been found around the time they cracked the 7.x encryption keys lets face it, they where probably looking into the system a hell of a lot more than previously in order to guarantee future compatibility, tbh gateway have probably been stretched out pretty thing between keeping up with nintendo, trying to block clones and adding new features to their current setup, im sure 4.x+ compatibility has probably been on the back burner for a while though....yeah looking into it, but focusing on preserving their existing dominance over the scene primarily, i wouldn't be surprised if they knew about the new3ds a while before the general public did, even 3dsbrew knew something was coming before nintendo made any announcements as they had noticed changes in the system FW referencing additional features that didnt even exist on the normal 3ds, gw probably saw the same stuff and figured it would be better to hold back and wait till the perfect moment to unleash it with maximum compatibility once it was released internationally.........who knows it may even be using something similar to ssspwn, and that's why they where forced to announce now rather than later, as nintendo may fix up whatever they are doing whilst patching ssspwn, im guessing we wont see a release until nintendo fixes ssspwn, i would imagine they are probably holding out to see if their exploit survives the patch....if it does they may still hold out for the international release of the N3DS

I don't think the GW team is waiting for the release of the N3DS because EU / US releases are... not soon.

I know that "soon" word for GW team is "special" LOL but between the news about 9.2 compatibility and the EU/US release of N3DS... it will be a very long wait for a "soon" release :p

I think that GW team reads GBATemp.
I think they saw a lot of people wanting to buy Sky3DS, even with 10 game limit (not every 7-10 children play more than this : only mario games + pokemon, I think, my 7 y old son have about 30 games on 32 GB SD and... he plays Pokemon and sometimes others like Zelda and Mario series), so they wanted to break the Sky3DS team so now less people buy Sky3DS and now GW team sells GW linker... even to 9.2 users.
Even if they did not made a 9.2 release, they had sold linkers...

So thank you Sky3DS, even with you bad linker :p

Yeah, I could see them holding back for hardware with those clues, but not before that - most revisions Nintendo makes aren't even worth waiting for as a consumer - I think they have searched just as hard for an exploit in every firmware, but they found one in 9 (I don't know this, and it wouldn't matter to me if I'm wrong).

Holding out for the international release would have been ideal, I don't think that's likely to happen though, that's March or something, at the earliest? I think we'll be playing on our updated GW cards before January is over (just a guess).

GBATemp is the biggest Nintendo hack forum, isn't it ?

Maybe equal with MaxConsole...

In fact, I don't know forum about PS3 hack (or other console) as big as here...

Nintendo sure is taking their sweet time with the next update... They have Smealum's exploit to patch, Sky3DS and Gateway to block.

I agree with the first two, but Gateway's v9.X exploit can't be patched until they know what flaw is in the system to actually do the patching. My guess is that they're waiting for Gateway to release their exploit and then patch it up as quickly as they can once they know how the exploit works.

Maybe, but surely they didn't introduce so much that they wouldn't know where to start looking.

No place for luck here.
They have 3 ways to find a 9.2 kernel exploit :
- buy it from another "shadow" dev which reverse engineered the firmware
- track one down 3DS RAM dump
- reverse engineering of Sky3DS

I doubt on the Sky3DS reverse, because it would work from 4.x TO 9.2, not only 9.2 but who knows...

Except Sky3DS most likely doesn't use a kernal exploit?
I know that. I meant what if they found a clue while reverse engineering Sky3DS (and possibly smealum's exploit) that led to finding a kernel exploit? Maybe they got an idea to approach from a different angle?

Even though smea's exploit doesn't have anything that can help with kernal access? It's been said many times that Ninjhax doesn't have the permissions to actually allow kernal access.
Also, the "clue" you're talking about probably never existed since Gateway announced that they were going to look into the New3DS before Sky3DS was even out. That made some of us to believe that they found a new flaw in the current firmware and that they wanted to see if the New3DS has the same flaw (which apparently does).
