Hello everyone!
I'll looking to start a translation team to translate Taiko no Tatsujin Wii!
I've already done some work researching the files, and here's what we're working with...
Classic formats:
  • TPL (images)
  • BIN (everything)
  • ARC
Unknown formats:
  • THP (cutscene files)
  • CTPL (compressed tpls, I believe)
  • CAWG (unknown)
Right now, translating the on-screen lyrics is completely possible (I've done a bit myself). Now, here's what I'd like us to complete before the translation is finished:
  • Translate lyrics
  • Translate cutscene text
  • Translate menu selections (menu, song list, etc.)
Here's who we need:
  • Hackers (needs to crack the unknown formats) [NEEDED]
  • Translators (who don't rely on Google Translate) [NEEDED]
  • Image editors (no MSPaint) [UNNEEDED FOR NOW]
PM me if you wish to join! Files you'll need will be provided.
For right now, only hackers and lyric translators are needed. After the CTPL format has been cracked (which I believe holds many of the menu images), image translators will be added.
Hope to work with you!
NOTE: Free time is a limited commodity at the moment, so I can only dedicate some of it to this. Things will move slow, but I'm hoping to have a release by the year end at the most.

Have there been any updates on getting the image files uncompressed?

If not, one (less than ideal) way around that may be using dolphin's texture replacement feature.

Sure this would mean it would only work on an emulator, but it does mean that you could easily replace any texture in the game.

Here's a quick demo I threw together, using takio 5 wii, and dolphin5 (yes, the outlines can be cleaned up.)

I'm currently making a translation for this game, and I use BrawlCrate for opening the cawg files. I just drag and drop them into the program and I can see all the textures in the file. Same thing with ctpl files. Not sure about swg files though. These swg files are inside of the cawg files. Does anyone know something about editing the text that uses the normal font? (not the taiko font) Example in the image below.

This type of text is not saved as a texture.

Also, does anyone know where the pause menu files are saved?

I have some notes on this game.

kaiwa/kaiwa.dat
Has 26 "string" entries.
u32 number of strings/offsets.
u32 offset entry.
Followed by an unknown format with the strings.
Has text strings in UTF-8 regular encoding (not shift-jis) which explains why the game doesn't need to be patched if your region is not set to Japan.
Text entries have a header with a name and some other data.

swg/pause_window/pause_window.awg
Uncompressed U8 archive, two files: the .swg contains strings, and the .tpl contains textures(duh)
Format is slightly different from kaiwa.dat, every string starts with 0xFF.
Your "connect a wii remote" string is in this file at 0xC38 (of the U8 file.)

Either the font in-game needs to be changed, or spaces need to be inserted to make it more readable.
Though adding spaces would bring in a different problem.

Good luck, I would like to see this translated someday.

Thank you very much! I actually thought that the kaiwa.dat file is something to do with the challenge dojo.
