And I guess we're back to disrespectful hammering. Especially tripping over a typo. If you need to argue over that, then I don't have a response for that.

The moment I made a claim, you could tell me I need to prove it. That is perfectly fine. However, the moment YOU make a counterclaim, you take over the burden of proof. That's how things work.
I actually did try to find the posts about Smealum's hints and people's deductions from it, but the posts are too old to effectively find with the search function. (Apparently the results are capped at ~200 posts?)
Since neither of us can provide proof for out claims, how is it not my word against yours?
And I didn't create the 'pointless discussion' single-handedly. You are just as guilty of it by replying to it and making equally if not more incredulous claims.

Aside from that, I don't know what to say... I am disappointed in the fact that I do my best to uphold a serious discussion, but all you can manage to do is trip over non-issues and reply mockingly and non-seriously, except for that one post.

The timing of Gateway's announcement suggests they are trying to compete with Sky3DS. Nothing more.
Sky3DS doesn't use the same exploit as NINJHAX, so why do you assume Gateway will?

No it doesn't... Not if you know anything about hacking or how to run a business.

If GW had a way to open up any more recent version of the 3DS firmware than 4.x they would have done so by now to increase their potential customer base. Any theories as to why they would hold back doing that baffle me. Really, ANY business is ALWAYS looking to grow their business unless they are on their way out.

Also, GW has said they can run on 4.5 and "soon" on 9.x. Not "Works on any 3DS firmware version" like Sky3DS. I'm very curious as to how some people (not you, The Real Jdbye, but since I'm in uber debate mode, Ill address some other issues) believe they are using the same method. If they were then GW wouldn't limit their market to just two major firmware versions.

On timing: If they found, were sold, stole or whatever a flaw in 9.x, it takes time to to find out if a flaw is exploitable or to RE stolen code. 9.x isn't that old!!! How quickly do you think you would have been able to do this? Even for "experts" this is often a Herculean task. Given that, it most likely has nothing to do w/ any recent events beyond the release of 9.x... Not Sky3Ds and almost certainly not Ninjhax.

And to end on a lighter note... I'm actually more inclined to speculate on the timing of needcash's thread and GW recent announcements than any of some of the other sides of this debate. What if this guy actually WAS what he claimed and all the recent advances in 3DS hacking are because of him?!? :-)

Here's the thing, blowing things open to say v6 or v7 would offer then what?
A bigger window?

It would not offer them "more customers" - because the ones that want to already are able to get 4.x devices for reasonable costs.
Its not like the market has run out of these devices. As others have pointed out, its just a matter of asking questions and looking around.

So, the key question is - "Why now?", what has changed?
And the answer to that is "New 3DS (XL)".
Because this new device runs the same firmware as the old one, they increase their potential platform as they would've if they had released immediately.
However more importantly, they drill into a NEW platform and audience aswell.

The key here is that you KNOW that Nintendo will close these holes off sooner or later. So why would they open it up earlier?
Sure, getting a bigger window than just 4.x devices would be nice - but it would not offer them something they did not already have.
With the New 3DS however, they get access to this new device.

A device that has greater potential and will by all accounts have exclusive titles.

You say they would be crazy not to release earlier? I say they would've been crazy to release earlier.
Exploits and openings are few and far between nowadays. Nintendo does their hardest to ensure that such holes are not present.
So when you do find one, its in your best interest to save it for when it'll do the most 'good'.
Business isn't just finding opportunities - its also knowing WHEN to take them onto the market.

Trust me, they had a way. ;)
This is not something they have just come up with. They were saving it for the right time. Now that the New 3DS is out and so is the Sky3DS, there's no better time.
