Hacking Will a Custom Firmware eventually be possible?

Custom firmware is already possible, but certain hacking groups won't set their pride and egos aside for the greater good.

We need backup loaders, we need Wii U homebrew, and we need it NOW!!! I don't see Nintendo reviving the system any time soon, even with a shitty Zelda-meets-Destiny-Warriors mashup, Super Smash Brothers Universe, and Mario Kart 8 in the near future.
Because homebrew will totally save the system. Seriously, so few people care about it (especially without backup loaders) that it won't help at all. Even if it would boost sales, the people who would buy it would mostly buy it for backup loaders and not buy any games, which doesn't help.

You know that piracy doesn't kill systems, right? Remember that thread Rydian wrote on the myths of piracy? Yeah, you should read it sometime. A very small perfectly of people who mod their console use it for backup loaders, so....that's irrelevant. Doesn't change the fact that there are, unfortunately, people out there whose pride gets in the way. Homebrew wouldn't kill the system at all, it wouldn't even hurt it.

I'm going to have to disagree with the notion that homebrew would kill the Wii U, piracy never killed a single system.

I'm not saying it would hurt, I'm saying it wouldn't save it. It would literally do jack shit for the overall performance of the system except for a tiny boost in hardware sales.

Than that would mean it wouldn't hurt to release it either. But unfortunately, many hackers have a pride issue or some kind of personal vendetta and will simply refuse to release the keys, or exploits, or whatever it is they have in their hands. There wouldn't be any lasting damage if they were released publicly. But again, pride gets in the way.

To be honest, the Wii U hacking scene was DOA, I doubt it's even going to flourish.

Yes there would. It's a long ways off before we could do anything (Trinux is a step towards that, which is the whole point), so if they released it then it would get patched and they might be subject to some sort of legal action. It would be counter-productive if they released it now.

So, are you saying that we can't or shouldn't rule anything out altogether? That there still might be a chance for something to happen?

Yes.

Basically imagine that Team Twiizers had released the Twilight Hack, but no homebrew (or method to develop it) had been created yet. Nintendo would have blocked it and an exploit would have gone to waste. That's pretty much the way things are right now for the Wii U.

There's no homebrew community that is creating homebrew so it's currently not worth it, nintendo will just block it and it's all over.

and how can there be a community creating homebrew if the console is not hacked?
That's the point of tri-core Linux. It's a step towards that. Unfortunately, people are choosing to bitch about nothing being done for them instead of helping. Anyone with a Wii U and the Homebrew Channel can help out, but that's too much to ask.

What about those who can't program worth crap, but still want to help anyway? The problem is, I don't even know how to code, much less understand the rudiments of PPC ASM.

You can test.

Can't argue with that :P I do confess that I did get lost in the TriLinux thread though. Anyway, that's neither here nor there, we still count the no. of flashes on the sensor bar, right? Along with screen-capping the code that the screen displays?
