It's on the retailer for selling early, not the consumer. There's nothing illegal about purchasing something from a retailer early as a consumer. Releasing a vital part for a game companies game so pirates can play it, is however very punishable, and I can understand why he feels the way he does. There's nothing immoral about buying something early, lmao.
