Basically, this is all you need to know:

Wii U - use Loadiine tutorials
Wii and GCN - use vWii and USB Loader GX tutorials

Right now, I want you to just follow the tutorial for Loadiine. Don't bother about vWii yet. We'll take it one step at a time.

Loadiine games go on an SD card. Yes, you can pick what game you want. You get WUDs, WUXs, or extracted games from "that ISO site"

It's very unstable and can take a fair few times crashing the wiiu and you need to unplug it from the power then try again, some games don't work and you need to convert the games into a format before they go on your SD card. Also loading times can be long when the exploit does work. It's pretty makeshift as its in the infancy stage.

As a beginner I would suggest you just go softmod your vWii first, it's easier and you can do all the things you already imagined with it (intalling hacks permanently, playing games through HDD), except playing wii U games.
If you want to play copies of Wii U games, you'll need Loadiin (which has only SD card access for now), and make sure you don't get your Wii U auto updated, this thread will hook you up with EVERYTHING you need to know : The Definitive Guide To Wii U Hacking

I dunno why I had the "GOTTA HACK THEM ALL" mentality with all my consoles, even if I had a Wii softmodded, I also had to hack the vWii on BOTH of my Wii U's too for no real reason. Well, only tangible one being that Wii U goes over HDMI so I can plug it to my HDTV while Wii is hooked with RGB to CRT widescreen.
