About bloody time, we waited 12 years for this. After the latest Wii Menu Installer V1 fiasco with Hard4Games, it seems like a disc with another name, Wii Menu Changer v1.00, was dumped in the meantime, containing wads for v1.0 Europe, US and Japan.

Before this, v1.0 was found in a leaked SDK, yet not really the same. I'm just glad we finally got v1.0, despite the channels not being included. And next up: the actual Startup Disc!

What practical uses could this have?

Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but besides preservation, why would someone want their system to go back to 1.0? More features like larger SD usage were things added over time to the Wii, so if you were to roll back to first version, you'll only get a more bare bones console, isn't it?

Maybe as a tool for bricks, or could help in homebrew creation?

Yeah, it's mostly just for preservation, and giving the feeling it's backed up and complete is nice. v1.0 has no use nowadays, except for documentation and future reference.

Yeah, historical interest

though, with how modular the Wii is, by just downgrading the Wii Menu to 2.0 (after installing a non-stub matching IOS!) you don't even lose much anyway
(1.0 should in fact be missing wiiconnect24 support and options, and probably lack the special handling for the weather/news channels)

I see! Thank you both for answering!

It's certainly great to have it preserved at last, specially if it took this long for it to happen, both for research and to simply not lose it forever.

Looking around I don't know what "fiasco" occurred, but looking around I found this site:
https://lostmediawiki.com/Wii_Start..._disc;_2006)#Apparent_Obtaining_by_Hard4Games

What an interesting story, I'll read more about it.

The LWM editors actually hate this topic, because it reads as non-sensical article with basicly everything being repeated to extend the page length.
But basicly, when I commented as "[2019-me why did you put this here]" on Youtube with the joke "Wait, is that... the Startup Disc?", me and some others quickly got a discussion with Hard4Games, until he replied the owner wants to release it soon. This got everyone on RGD way too exited, until we just thought Hard4Games just said it to get their name out there. It seems like the owner finally released the disc a month later out of nowhere. Too bad we can't run these WAD's yet on Dolphin, they just error out.

To clarify: This is *not* the Wii Startup Disc. This is an RVT-R disc containing the Wii Menu Changer aka Wii Menu Installer for RVT-R Reader devkits. I had previously dumped v2 of this disc, which had System Menu v1.0 but only for USA region. (Other copies of the disc image have been available in various SDKs, possibly including the v2 image, but also later versions containing System Menu 4.3.)

An actual Wii Startup Disc would be on a pressed retail disc, not an RVT-R. Among other things, RVT-R media cannot be read by retail consoles due to differences in the sector scrambling seed and the encryption key used.

That having been said, LMW needs to update their page to reduce confusion. The disc pictured by Hard4Games is clearly an RVT-R disc and not a retail Wii Startup Disc.

Oh I see. Well, I personally can't really fault someone to take some time to dump certain lost software. For example the NES Simcity took a lot of time since it was found to have it dumped, and I actually thought that it would never happen, but out of nowhere a few months ago it finally got released, and with lots of extra information and stuff. Depending on what it is, you may not have the proper equipment, and trusting other people with such rare items can be both worrying and dangerous.

That said, I can also see why some people would get frustrated, as there are some awful stories out there.

The Lost Media Wiki was the first result I got, but yeah, probably could have found something better laid up.

Finally someone who said it. The LMW article lists a v3.1 installer with RVT-R on it as a "startup disc". However, considering RedBees managed to bypass the startup screen by changing the disc's title id to RAAE and by changing some files around, I believe we can make our own startup disc now that we have an official v1.0, rather than something from an SDK.
