I have occasionally been encountering the 160-2713 error with my Wii U's external hard drive. I have read that the Wii U has a hidden setting which might help prevent it by stopping the hard drive from entering sleep mode:-

My question is what exactly does this setting do? Does it stop the Wii U OS from telling the hard drive to enter sleep mode? (Like disabling the Windows "Turn off hard disk after X minutes" setting) Or does it make the Wii U OS 'touch' or write a file to the drive every few minutes to prevent it from automatically going to sleep? (Spinning down)
