Not quite sure where to post this, and not sure what IRC channels still exist; but I figured someone might be interested in this. It seems the Wii Startup Disc may have been found and dumped; anyone know anything more about this?

Just digging this up in case anybody in the future comes across this.
My comments apply to this video, too:

That's not the startup disc. It's a disc used on RVT-R units to install the system menu over the dev menu. They are common and something like 16 revisions were released to the developer FTP server over the life of the wii. Individual developers could burn them to a disc and use them if needed.

The commenters on the youtube video can be forgiven for thinking that it is the startup disc, but it says a lot about the guys who run the channel that they didn't immediately dismiss it in the comments. If you're making videos on a topic, you have to know what you're talking about before you start.

For one, it's on a disc format that the wii can't read. The Wii can read DVDs and Wii discs, but there's no world in which a retail wii can read the contents of that disc.
They could have checked the title id. If it's not RAAE, it's not the startup disc. (this would have required dumping the disc, which they can't do reliably)
They could have checked the wads on the disc to see if they used the development common key or the retail common key.

I really have a problem with the H4G guys. It's fine if you want to make youtube videos, but they pretend to be an authority.
The only people who know less about development equipment are the amateurs who send them that stuff to cover in their videos.

Now there's this site: https://lostmediawiki.com/Wii_Startup_Disc_(lost_software_disc;_2006)
Some user updated it to parrot the seriously stupid claim that H4G found the startup disc. Now, there's a source that articles and other youtube videos might use as a reference that contains incorrect information due to H4G's incompetence.

To recap:
Hard4Games did not find the startup disc.
Stop sending them your crap.
