Hacking Wii speak update? Will it have any negative effects on homebrew?

Hey there, I installed a wad of the Wiispeak channel about three weeks ago, before it had even been released in the US. I don't even have the accessory yet, but I wanted to at least see what the channel looked like. Anyway, it is prompting me to download an update via shop channel... should I do it or will it effect homebrew/playing backups on my Wii? I am running 3.3u v.1.

If I remember correctly there was another wad that you had to have installed for it to display correctly (with no update) don't remember which tho... google it
