Why do electronic switches go weak to strong?

That is normally the case, but I have a shitty fan that goes from off position, to strongest, to medium and then weak. However, why do switches normally go weak to strong any way, is there a legit explanation?
 
Is there a real reason to why your asking this?
It doesnt really matter, but I guess its up to the makers of the fan sooo hmm that is a good question though, Mine goes from Off-1-2-3 (1 being strongest)
 
Yeah, the fan in my room goes from off-fullblast-medium-low. It's pretty annoying, but I guess it's just whoever made it.
 
In my opinion this just seems to be the more logical setup. When driving a car you go from park (off) to low gear, to medium, to high.
It just makes sense to have electronic switches set up in the same way, even though they don't have to be.


EDIT: My fan is odd. Middle position is off. Toggled left is low and toggled right is high.
 
its because you are increasing the voltage that goes to the device, thus the fan spins faster
 
Center off makes sense because that can be done with a single switch (either it connects to one end, it connects to the other or it is in-between and connects to none at all). I guess Off-Hi-Med-Lo makes sense to reduce the distance between the most used positions, but other than that, who knows?
