I'm having a portable existential gaming crisis.

In this thread please tell me why you still appreciate and play your PSP, despite it being a 20 year old (:wtf:) system.

I loved the PSP when it came out and have a lot of nostalgia for it and the hacking scene, I want to see if you all have some good reasons for me to spruce up my PSP and continue enjoying it like it's 2006.

I love my Steam Deck and it's amazing and does everything but it's not exactly pocketable like the PSP. And the GBA is great, especially with an everdrive but it does a lot less, if you still choose the PSP over the Vita or anything else, then how come?

Personally I continue to enjoy my psp3004 for these reasons:

1) Numerous jrpg and t-rpg games created specifically for this console;
2) I occasionally use OpenBor for PSP and its user made beat'em up games;
3) I really appreciate the version of Neko Project 2 on PSP, and playing its recent visual novels translated into english;
4) I love certain PC-engine CD games injected into the internal PSP emulator, which run perfectly;
5) The zsnes9x tyl emulator is among the best snes emulators on a portable console, and supports all titles;
6) When I feel like it, I connect the console to the TV via its component cable.
7) Pops, the internal psp psx emulator, is practically perfect, and by changing the ID number of certain games when necessary, it is totally compatible.

Ultimately, do what you like; I don't like modern games, so this console is perfect for me.

I just really appreciate the PSP in general. Sony was flying high from the success of the PSOne and PS2, and expanding into the handheld market made logical sense.

Back then, Sony (smartly) appealed to multiple markets, so they brought many familiar franchises over. Devs and publishers were enthusiastic, with Square-Enix being a particular standout. Rockstar made two 3D GTA games, and Konami released multiple Metal Gear Solid games on the PSP. The PSN allowed users to access their PSOne libraries, though some games (like Suikoden I and II and Rockman DASH) got official ports. On top of all that was the UMD technology, and several movies got UMD releases.

To me, the PSP is a great piece of gaming history, and it's a solid handheld on its own merits. Homebrew opened up many doors, including the ability to use microSD cards and backup data.

I know, I know, that game scarred me a little too. Come to think of it, MGSV had some annoyances as well, like having to go through the tutorial level multiple times.

I mainly refer to the

Personally i never liked the PSP screen for fast pacing games. Even on my 3004 model variant (that is supposed to have the better screen) the screen always looked to blurry.

Nowadays i play PSP games on my PS Vita, where the blur is a lot less noticable.

I onced tried the 1st model (1004?) and god the screen was bad. Near unplayable bad, for games like burnout or others with fast moving images.

I know the running gag, do not fret.

I need @BeniBel in here, but I'm going to play amateur psychologist anyway. I've watched enough Frasier, I can do this.

Caller, I suspect you are taking the opportunity to mention.. that game again because you are still struggling with the issue emotionally and mentally. We all reach a challenge we cannot surmount, from E.T. to Battletoads. It may be time to go back and make another attempt. Otherwise, it may be healthier to let it go and make a fresh start with new games.

Playing OG Kingdom Hearts BBS on PSP is like if you summoned Simba in KH 1 but instead he tells you to kys

This is kinda one of the things I'm trying to decide. Even though I love the PSP, the screen in my 3000 is just kind of weird and has really distinct interlacing lines that are kind of distracting. I had changed the display with one from ebay so maybe I just got a bad one. Should I replace it again?

Or should I just get a PS Vita? I never had one when I was younger so it would be a new experience for me but at the same time, wouldn't have any of the nostalgic connections that I have to the PSP. On the other hand, it seems to be much more capable..

to actually contribute to the thread instead of me making jokes: i'd recommend by starting with getting some accessories like a wristband and whatnot, and look up some revival services if there are any, it all starts with thinking about what your favorite things were about the console as a kid, i planned to make a review thread for my DS that basically resembled what you're going for but my laptop crashed while i was writing it, and about the point about the screen, sure it's ass but i think that's part of the charm like, im told DS games look better on a 3DS, and i cannot for the life of me get behind that sentiment, in short i'd highly recommend looking into accessories and software that can help replicate old memories with it

I've had the PSP 1001 [which got l:cry:st somehow], and now I have the PSP 3:D:D1. Which I'm happy with :)
I like the PSP-100x consoles. Although the screen isn't that bright compared to the E-Street, it has internet capabilities for homebrew and the included web browser. I've already modded mine with ARK-4 CFW and still retains most of the features from PRO-C2 and LME.

I really like my PSP 1000. I wasn't even born, when this thing first came out, but I love these older consoles. The screen is not the best, but i'd like to do an ips screen swap.
The things I like about the PSP so far:
  • easy to carry
  • easy to mod
  • Relatively small games (mostly under 5GB)
  • Support for 128GB SD (with adapter)
  • lot of English patched Japanese games (Especially VN's and Project Diva games ;))
  • a variety of genres for games
What I don't really like:
  • abscence of 2nd joystick
  • the squere button
  • it can't connect to wpa2 wifi or newer
  • need to use adapter for SD card
But I can ignore these downsides, because I really like to play games on original hardware.
I would like to buy a Vita too, but they are too expensive for me:(
Currently hunting for a DSi to be my first ever Nintendo:)

IMO if you have the chance to own multiple consoles, don't choose one, keep them all. You'll regret selling them, especially if you want one later and you see how the prices go up so fast

IMO you should get a Vita. If you can get an OLED one, but the LCD model is very good too.

Many games that for me where difficult to play on the PSP, like MotorStorm Artic Edge or GTA VC stories, play a lot better on the Vita (or should I say, the Vita screens are far superior to the ones other PSP).

But if you cant find an Vita, you can try emulation. You said you have an SteamDeck? if so that is an emulation beast :D

I was summoned here from a dark sleep...

Nothing abnormal with playing older games and systems. Especially when you were there when they came out. Not only do they often still offer solid gameplay, they also bring back memories of more simple times. Plus, no updates that take almost an hour...

The PSP was an awesome system. I had more and better memories to the DS, but still enjoyed many hours on it.

In the end, gaming is a hobby with the purpose of entertainment and relaxation. It doesn't matter which system can bring that to you, as long as it does.

Now excuse me, time to play some Nintendo DS!

This one line says it all for me. :teach:

Just like I'm dealing with windows right now, with it's almost never ending "New Update. Will Restart during off hours." 😦 :angry:
Lately.
