    So, the show is quiet, so I crank the volume, but then it blows the speakers during commercials. Wtf.

    I think it's to wake your ass up when you fall asleep on the couch late at night. also, its to inform you that a fantastic repetitive infomercial is just about to start that you won't want to miss! [IMG]

    Its because statistically people leave the room during commercial breaks and they want you to be able to hear the ad and return to the room to hear the rest.

    Its weird thought, because I've only noticed this on SD TV, never on HDTV (I think)

    The real reason is that commercials are compressed in a way where where the loud and soft parts are scrunched so there are really no loud or soft.

    Say if this was your tv show:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - loud
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Soft

    And this is your commerical:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - loud
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Soft

    Sorry if I did no explain it properly.

    That is the reason, my wording might not be perfect though.

    I changed ____________________________________ to ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ because they are sound waves.

    we get that in the UK too, i hate it as i have to turn the volume down quickly before i go deaf, there are some tvs that have auto volume feature for commercials.

    What are commercials?

    Oh I forgot, some people still watch tv for tv shows (I download all of mine, sans commercials).

    Yea same, I had cable here for a few months. I think I had it on for maybe a total of an hour and that was to watch a magic special. What a waste of money [IMG]

    Duude I was gonna say that [IMG]

    I was gonna be like : Because everyone goes to the bathroom during commercials so they want you to hear it there too. Because it's a scientific fact that people remember more on the can than anywhere else...

    That really annoys me.

    Three reasons:
    1. To get your attention.
    2. To wind you up.
    3. To make you turn down the volume until you wait for commercial #10 to finish.

    This is why most of the time, I record my fave shows instead of watching them live.

    So you'll still hear the commercial while you're in the kitchen making a snack.

    Kind of defeats the point; "Wake the fuck up, you totally just missed whatever you were watching! Want a better deal on your car insurance?"

    I hit the mute button. It doesn't bother me much if I miss part of the show or forget I was watching at all and miss the rest after walking away from the TV. Read Neil Postman's book "Entertaining Ourselves to Death". You won't regret it.
