OP
I have a friend or recently purchased a Gamecube and is getting an Action Replay Disc and a SD reader, but he doesn't know where to start. Does anyone have any tips?

You might already know this, but if you have a modded Wii with Gamecube ports you can throw a memory card in it and install Swiss on it, along with several game exploits available. You can use this to launch homebrew without using a modchip or action replay, but the SD adapter is nice because you'll be able to use a lot more storage.

You can fit a few game backups on SD cards but if you're looking to use a hard drive with it, i.e. to store a full collection of games, you'll need something like a WODE or a Wiikey Fusion, which are very hard to get a hold of.

Newer action replay versions integrate SD support making them more convenient. Though Datel removed the ability to enter codes.
For older action replays, there's a homebrew exploit (it originally released before Nintendo's SD reader).

Be aware some games and programs need a plain SD card not SDHC.

Are you using the SD Media Launcher? It sounds like you're using something similar to it, anyway, one helpful homebrew program I personally recommend is GCMM (GameCube Memory Manager); I originally had this on my Wii, then I eventually got it working with my GameCube. It allows you to backup the entire memory card or any individual game's save(s) to the SD card, and it can also put new saves on the memory card that are on the SD card (for this, I find it's easiest to put individual saves on the memory card, even if they overwrite a previous save file for the same game). It's helpful if you play a game on the Dolphin emulator, and want to use a save from your memory card.
