BUT STILL NOT AS BUSTED AS BANDANA DEE
I'd like to repair it myself, considering
A: It's got a9lh
B: It's the pokemon 20th anniversary model (not losing that)
C: I don't want to pay more than i have to.

So my first question is what all need to be replaced. It should be just the top screen, a no brainer, but I don't want to be wrong. Next is where can I buy the component(s) The model is new 3ds not the XL. I want something that will work properly and for a long time, just as the original is supposed to. 3rd, are there any videos on the procedure? when i google it i only get results for the XL. I know they're very similar but I don't want to mess anything up.

Any and all help is appreciated. Any relevant questions can be answered.

i just went through this myself. it is NOT an easy fix, before you even buy the screen try to take yours apart first. in my case the bottom screws ended up stripping and i had to dremel the case apart just to open it.
Also make absolutely sure you buy the right screen, the ribbon cables on the new 3ds xl screen aren't quite the same as the original xl.
Also also, wrapping the cables up and sliding them through the hinges is a massive pain in the ass.
If you can spare the $100 bucks or so just send it to Nintendo.

You have to use the correct screwdriver for the job at hand, if it is not the right size i suggest you buy one so you don't strip your screws.

Be careful of the screws, they strip super easy. You might as well save your self the head ache and buy a can of WD40 now.

Or the right screwdriver for the job.
I had the right one, but they where in there so tight stripping was inevitable. I ended up buying a Galaxy 3ds to replace the FE fates one i destroyed :'( But now i have it modded and get to hang with you fine gentlemen, so its a wash i'd say

well, if i do send it to nintendo, what would be the best way to hide my shenanigans? im assuming the first thing would be a nand and sd backup then deletion of any homebrew/suspicious looking software, then what?

Revert to stock. Keep in mind they will update it. Remove all files. Either do this or plan on them not fixing it.
