have you present that frankenstain is a mix up of things? well a frankenfirmware is a mixup from system cias from different version. for example a 9.2 everything except 4.5 system setting

okay so I think I have understood, but it seems unlogical that this happens

Depends on context. "Franken" as a prefix is a reference to Frankenstein's monster.

As an example, if you DSiWare downgrade 11.2 so it has 10.4 FIRM, you could call the result a frankenfirmware.
Or if your console crashes while downgrading to 9.2, that might also be a frankenfirmware.

I think it's when you stick to a firmware like 10.3 that can downgrade but you basically dont and take advantage of the other exploits on it like being able to install legit cia's and trick the firmware to go into the eshop but remain on 10.3 without a emunand or a9lh.Think of it like a 3.55 ps3 for example where you remain on that firmware but you can spoof higher ones without updating.

it's an unintended mix-up of titles that don't belong to the same firmware version, usually happens when the downgrade process is interrupted and incomplete. This may render the original entry point un-usable if the related title has been downgraded (but not other titles), hopefully the title has an alternate entry point on the lower version.

Here's the perfect example of a frankenfirmware.

As mentioned already it's usually the result a system update failing to install completely.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
