What will the next Xbox be called?

xbox_naming.jpg

With the recent official acknowledgement of the next-gen PlayStation and its unsurprising, yet conventional name of PlayStation 5, we are left wondering what direction Microsoft will choose when it comes to naming their successor to the Xbox One.

The Xbox brand has had a less than straight forward history when it comes to naming their hardware after the release of the original Xbox in 2001.

With the upcoming release of the PlayStation 3 in 2005/06, Microsoft allegedly wanted to avoid calling their next console the Xbox 2 to avoid consumers splitting hairs between numbers and causing consumer confusion with possible assumptions that 2 is greater than 3, so instead they opted for the Xbox 360 name when it released ahead of the PS3 in '05. Though this decision only furthered complications when it came time for the next generation Xbox...

Though many believed the next generation Xbox would be called the Xbox 720 after a supposed teaser was seen in the trailer for the 2011 film 'Reel Steel'. Instead, Microsoft chose to go back to the drawing board and turned heads when they revealed the Xbox One name during the Xbox Reveal 2013 event. The Xbox One released in 2013 up against the PlayStation 4.

Further revisions of the Xbox One would be released under the monikers Xbox One S and Xbox One X. With the S being a revised, cost efficient revision of the original Xbox One and the X being a competitor to the rival PS4 Pro.

It's all a stark contrast to Sony's continued method of naming each home console PlayStation revision numerically and this makes us wonder what Microsoft will decide when it comes to naming the next Xbox which is rumoured to release in 2020 against the PlayStation 5.

Will they follow the likes of the Windows and Android teams and jump to 10 or perhaps X? What are your thoughts?

Xbox 10

They've been moving to integration with the PC market, it seems to me. They'll use the Xbox 10 to combine with the windows 10 marketplace, and have a purchase in one be available in both. and the potential confusion between "x" and "10" would be par for the course. Plus it's 2 times as much as playstation gasp

Or they can further confuse the FUCK out of people, by making it called the "Xbox X". Kind of like what they did with the Xbox One. Fun times, fun times.

Guys, if WiiU was so confusing for everyone, how come Xbox One didn't fail?
Do you seriously think xbox one is a good name noone should of bought it as its not even the first xbox - most pathetic name in console history

The original meaning behind Xbox One was that it was your center for entertainment. Then they completely screwed up, fired the old CEO and now their belief is to “play the game you want, wherever you want, however you want” so I think it’ll be named some dumb thing like the Xbox Spark or Xbox Swirl. Or possibly just Xbox but I doubt it.

Xbox 720? HAHAHAHHA is this a joke? Is this 2012 calling again? Hahaha

Xbox home edition (for casual gamers)
Xbox professional edition (gamers)
Xbox ultimate edition (collectors).

Some games will require Pro or Ultimate. Only basic games will work on home edition.

XBOX FIRST to keep tradition in having something to "1" in the name
