Yesterday my mate gave me a old pc from 2001.
It comes with:

248mb ram
2.0ghz
and windowsxp (which takes like 15mins to boot up)

I'm not quite sure yet what to do with it other than maybe install linux.

So i thougt i could get some ideas by psoting here

What do you guys think i should do with it?

(P.S i dont wanna spend any money on upgrading it.)

what I should do is overload it with virusses. not one, but alot. if they run through eachother then the computer will make crazy sounds and have funny effects.
thats what I should do with an old computer. but yours seems to be quite fast. you could also use it for a reserve if your main computer wont work.
sorry for my bad language

if you don't know what to do with it, then you don't need it.
If you needed disk space, ftp servers, webserver, etc. you already asked how to do it.

If you want to do something with it anyway, you can play old games (even if 2Ghz is not so old).
I thought you had a pentium1 133Mhz where you could install windows 95 and play Ultima7 under DOS with the joy of configuring Quem and himem.sys

lol, you could whack in at least a bit more RAM. I know you don't want to spend money, but you can probably get your hands on at least another 256MB stick by salvaging from other wrecks.

After that, whack on a Media-based Linux distro, such as Gentoo (look around, though), hook it up to an old stereo and you've got yourself a DIY media center.

Or, you could um, make it into a fishtank. I've seen it done with some success. =/

Set up some kind of contest in the contest and polls section here and just make the person pay the shipping cost lol, im sure some poor kid on here could use it.
or donate it to the salvation army. I personally would gut it and sell the parts if i could. And if the harddrive was a worthy size keep to backup a few things and interface with it with this thing

You could use it for playing back media files on your tv or something, provided it had the right connections.

Other then that you could use it as a torrent server if you use bittorrent or something.

Oh and something is wrong if xp takes 15 minutes to boot up. I've seen xp run on 128mb of ram and it can handle a few tasks. Maybe it needs to be formatted and reinstalled.

Hm, this wouldn't be the same machine you were trying to sabotage last week would it? Render his PC unusable so he chucks it out and you get it for free? Man that's low!
