I picked up a Vita (PCH-1101) a couple months ago on craigslist mostly because it was a good deal - 3g/wifi version, brand new, for $100. I had read a bit about the Vita hardware, which sounds really nice, and figured for the price it'd be nice to have one one hand if/when new Vita-only games come out that I'd like to play, and of course I'd love to be able to hack it if/when that ever becomes a possibility.
Unfortunately, I failed to do my research on how the software side of things work, and I'm not at all satisfied with that. I'll spare you the details, but the short version is that CMA, forced phoning home, proprietary (and stupidly expensive) memory cards, amongs other things, just really rub me the wrong way, to the point that I'm just not interested in even using it as-is.
So, I have an almost brand new Vita PCH-1101 that I messed with for about 2 hours and put back in its original box, with the original firmware on it as I didn't want to upgrade it just yet (I'm not sure of the exact version, but it's earlier than 2.0). What should I do with it?
The leading two options in my mind are:
1. Leave it in the box and just wait/hope for a native exploit to come out to make the thing far more useful. I'd *love* to be able to use this like I do my PSP, with all of my games ripped to ISO and copied over to the memory stick for quick and easy access. I figure leaving it on the old firmware version would improve my chances of being able to hack it if that day ever comes.
2. Sell it. I'm reasonably certain I can sell it for a profit and make a little money off it. Of course, if I go that route and then the Vita does become hackable at some point, I'll need to hunt down a suitable one for hacking that's still in good condition, which may not be any cheaper than what I've already paid.
I'm kind of leaning toward the former at this point - I don't really need that $100 at the moment, so if I can consider than an early investment that will pay off later in the form of a hacked Vita then I'll consider it money well spent. Of course, if it doesn't look like that's likely to happen pretty much ever, then it'd just be a waste.
So, I'm interested in what the GBAtemp community things. Is it worth holding onto as-is, or am I just wasting my time and money waiting and hoping for a native hack? or are there any other suggestions I can consider?
Thanks. :-)
