In an effort to remove the reliance on the GBA games to get older Pokemon you are given the opportunity to chose one of the starters from gens 1 and 3 later in the game also. (this is gen 2 and D/P/Plat are gen 4) You could have legit versions of all the starters from all the games with just HG/SS and D/P/Plat.
I'm totally going Chikorita, Charmander, and Mudkip. Then go to the DTS for the others trading bred starters for equivalents.

Also going a little off topic now, but you can get the three Legendary birds from R/B and Mewtwo also in these re-releases according to Bulbapedia.
