What is the shortest safe length of a stopover flight?

There's a flight I'm looking at which has a 90 minute stopover. If things go smoothly that's enough time but I'm worried that the first flight will be rescheduled or delayed then I'll miss the second. Both flights are with the same airline but I don't know if they'll cover for me if they screw up or if I'll have to pay for a new ticket.

They generally only will cover you if they are booked together

90 minutes is usually fine as long as no delays and you don't have to go through security a second time
