What is the point of downgrading your 2ds or 3ds playing the newest games like Zelda Tri Force Heroes or Major Mask?

Downgrading your firmware to 9.2 allows you to set up things like custom firmwares (CFWs) and an emunand. This, in turn, allows you to safely install unsigned and signed CIAs, which allow you to install games and utilities that wouldn't run on later 3DS firmware versions. Some games are only compatible with higher firmware versions, but this can be circumvented.
