Homebrew What is HANS?

HANS runs in userland, so no it can't run games.
What it can do however, is:
change language and region
overclock cpu for better fps (n3ds only)
load romhacks
firmware spoof
Interesting! So you need to have the specific cartrage in while playing the rom hacks? Like the corresponding game? - And this also is the same with other-region games?

You can use digital copies as well. HANS pretends to be the game initially, spoofs firmware/region/whatever options you picked, and then runs the game proper.

You need to have the original game to even launch the patch.

think of it as a hotel room. You cant get in without the key

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it is kinda related:
Why do you have to use HANS to launch nintendo software from the Homebrew launcher?

You don't have to you can. But because it's currently the only homebrew app that does it, but someone could write another program that does it, but there is not really a point because HANS works just fine.
