Hello everyone, hopefully this is suitable for this forum. I've always wanted to know. What exactly does leaked mean? I always thought it was something someone that worked at a company (or on a project) snuck out into the public a little or too early but it seems like just another word for released or here's a sneak peak depending on the media.

A leak is when someone or some group releases content of some form before it's scheduled/unscheduled release.
The 5.5.x WiiU kexploit for example was a leak, because someone other than the devs that was given the private kexploit released it without their permission and before its intended release.

You pretty much answered your own question. In the context of the leaked kernel exploit, it means that it was distributed in private to people the devs trusted, but one of them broke that trust and released it to the public before it was intended to be brought out.
