what do i need to start modding?

do I need an official Sony memory card to start modding or can i just get an adapter and a 3rd party sd card

Ditch the Sony Card, it's awful.

Get an SD2VITA micro sd card adapter here (take your pick):

Next, get the micro SD card of your choice. I originally got a 256Gb, but was filling it up fast. Now I have a 1TB card and I've got room for literally anything. And just like above, no problems with this card whatsoever.

Finally use the vita.hacks.guide to hack your Vita. Here is a good video that sums it up perfectly. I have this hack and my Vita has been behaving PERFECTLY. No problems to speak of whatsoever...

I strongly recommend that you watch this video several times before you hack your Vita. Get familiar with it and then run the hack. You'll be up and running in no time!
