Gaming What do I enable to allow auto updating for Wii U games?

I dont want to make assumptions and make a mistake I'll regret later but I assume auto updating for games happen from Spotpass. Is it possible to have Spotpass on to have game updates while using homebrew DNS to block system updates or is it all or nothing?
