Make sure the one you buy is R4iDSN, that's the one that can use the official wood firmware.
There's another R4i Gold that manually compile their own Wood R4 firmware, it's confusing.

I could be wrong, but I don't think any of them have the bulge.
The AceKards (and clones) with the bulge have a chip on the back of the card, opposite the contacts, which is the top row of images.

Although, it could be the blob of epoxy(?) on the R4i Ultra/R4i Gold 2.0, but I thought the chip was bigger, square and more centered.

The R4iDSN.com (the one official supported by Wood) has a bulge.

They produce new ones just right now without the bulge. But those in stores still have it.

When you look at "R4i Gold" unboxing videos at Youtube, you can see the bulge of old R4i Golds (cn now)

But new pictures of the cn-R4Gold don't show that bulge anymore.

---- Does that sound a bit -- weird? But it's important to me. lol.

Whoaaaaaaaa. Someone please clarify something for me.

There are two versions of the R4i that have Wood support, from what I gather:
R4iDSN and R4i Gold (from r4ids.cn, right?)
What's the difference?

Then there's the other R4i Gold (r4dis.com?) which is a clone of Acekard and can use AKAIO?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I am so confused.)

R4iDSN(www.r4idsn.com) can be officially supported by wood r4, but there is a window on the centre of the cart.
R4ids gold(www.r4ids.cn) can also be officially supported by wood r4 and there is no window on the cart.
The difference is the window.



Besides,
R4i gold(r4ids.com) is just a r4i ultra(not clone), which can not be supported by WOOD R4.
But there is akaio1.81 for it right now.(Not sure that it is updted frequently later).

r4ids gold (CN wood) supported 1.4.1 via an update


R4iGold (R4iDS.com - for Akaio) didnt offer a firmware update, you had to buy another card (2.0) for it to support 1.4.1, so i would go with the first one, at least this time they gave you the update via a small download without having to buy another card
