Just read this today:

"
The World Health Organization says that compulsively playing video games now qualifies as a new mental health condition, in a move that some critics warn may risk stigmatizing too many young players

PS- the bro-dude in the video for MSN seems to be a paid actor.

PPS- Is this why video games kind of suck lately (devs trying to avoid players from sinking hours into their work)? Probably not.

I saw this earlier, Kinda stupid, saying that people who are addicted, have a mental illness, When really they just need to shut off the console/computer.

And why did you link my post? it's talking about Mental health in general, not about mental health and video games xP

Its considered an illness as much as gambling addiction is. You can't collect welfare for it, or anything of that nature, but you can get help. Some people may need that help to stop, not everyone has great self-control. In short, this provides a possible benefit for some people, while not hurting any others.

Mental illness? Did any one of these people ever stop to think why we play them or why we do it so often? I bet not. Some people do it as a comfort, sure it can be seen as addiction kinda like drugs, but again why do they think people do it? Is cause people have times where they just need to escape stressful and problematic situations in real life and get sometime to just forget about reality. I suppose that people who sleep too much has mental problems too right? Cause we like dreaming about things that make us happy.

How many times is some one gonna target video games and people who play them as a problem in this century!?

Figured good reading is good reading?

Yes, of course it's video games because clearly other forms of media can't be addictive at all.

Another way to view it: the people W.H.O. (see what I attempted there?) "diagnose" these "problems" might need a mental health check.

Of course, the real reality is, we know anything can become addictive and cause other problems; the remedy to it, just like a diet, is balance of portions.

I'm sick of a certain media being the target for this, it's so one-sided. Why not TV, why not music, movies, etc?

Addiction is a behavioral illness. makes sense. Also for those unaware addiction has more than one category. there is physical (like with drugs) behavioral (like with routine) There is mental (like ocd) and there's a gray area involving non addictive drug withdrawals (zoloft comes to mind)

lol! When I heard of this I sent my dad a link to the article in a text saying "Welp, you were right, it's official. I'm retarded."
If I would get a dollar everytime I read an article that calls people who play videogames mentall ill, i'd be richer than microsoft and google combined

Yeah, I completely agree there.

Remember video games is just a hobby. As much as sports, hanging with friends, working, and doing the usual life.

World Health Organization message should be:
Anything that's too "perfect", will kill you in the end. Stay focused in Real Life and have balls / gonads to face real life.

People get so defensive, here's a thought; maybe we should stop being so offended by the idea that we might not be emotionally or mentally 100%. That loser that rented a van and plowed through a bunch of people in Toronto didn't make his decision with a healthy mind. But I bet he would have been just as OFFENDED as anyone here.

Never mind that drugs, porn, etc are addictive or a major issue, but video games are just the worst! /s
Yes, it's a problem, but I wish news outlets didn't make games out to be the worst kind of addiction. If people had actual jobs/lives, or things to do, this'd never happen.

Until we become the rulers via death-by-____(or natural causes) to those in "power" currently?

I think we could also make a video game for the people who believe it's a video games' fault that ____ is having ___ problem.

Or, we make a contrast that all Major League ____'s "train" to the point of the training becoming a mental health issue--even working out, studying ____, going to school, raising a child, etc,....including making laws and defining terms without unbiased study and equal representation with open votes from those "afflicted" peoples, as well as a window of time to review said decision if: terminology, scientific study, governing laws, or any other knowledge should upset the established definition of _____.

So, maybe, five more times?

That's not the problem though, Alot of people do have mental illnesses, and use Games to cope, I for one use games to "cope" so I usually play them often, now saying that's a mental illness in itself, is just stupid.

I don't think you realize(unless you do), The percentage of people who don't play games, are going to see people who play games alot, as mentally ill, Though some are addicted, and probably do need help, I believe that would be a small percentage out of everyone.

This came from the World Health Organization, so it isn't like FOX made fake news. But yes, it is one-sided, for now.

I'm more than fairly sure, in time, one of the members of this site could write a paper detailing all of the "issues" raised in the W.H.O. and take a good jab at how everything should be and could be defined.

Although, with paid actors (like the kid in the video on MSN), there will always be a "crutch" for these fools to refer to and lean heavily upon. We could also take a stance that the people interviewed, studied, and those who would go on to make the final decision, know little to nothing of the definitions and laws they plan to create....and sadly, eventually do create.
