I've bought a used Wii U without the gamepad as I purely want to play Wii games on it so I can retire my Wii and enjoy the HD.

I knew you needed the gamepad to set the console up but the Wii U was sold with this already done. I have only just realised that I would be unable to configure the internet connection without the gamepad.

Could the vWii system settings via the dummy Weather and News channels or Priiloader be a workaround for this? Will it allow me to enter my internet settings and save them? Or is this vWii settings screen completely non-functional?

Wasn't there a homebrew to stream the Gamepad screen to a PC so you could set things up there?
Also with HID to VPAD, I think you can use any controller instead of the Gamepad. This doesn't resolve the screen issue though, where you input your password.

Edit: Found it:

I think it's kind of a pain to set up (and also Linux only) but it will work for a one time thing.

HID to VPAD doesn't really do much, because System Settings only displays on the bottom screen. SwapDRC can swap the screens but doesn't work in System Settings...

U do need gamepad for Wii U system settings, till not long ago.^_^

Use Aroma, and download the latest of plugin "Better Settings", then you can config network with your Pro controller. Yes you still need pro controller, Wiimote alone cannot do this job.
