Hi everyone! You probably don’t know me but I am new to the community. For the past few weeks, I have been working with someone who goes by lolichan195 to crack and translate the game. It could possibly take a little bit of time but I know this game is on the list of requested translations so I thought people might be pleased to hear this!!!

I will update with update you all with... well... updates! if you have any questions, please don’t be shy and ask away!!! Thanks!

Update: I am going to be home on Sunday so with that said, I can try to also start the translations. lolichan195 is not able to work on the project for a few days so it will be on and off.

I am home and I shall work on the game. The first little section was translated by Karen.

There seems to be a problem with the type of files that the game uses. There are files that are as follows (to my knowledge):

.ahx ~ looks like these are for the game's sound; ex: vkbgm_01.adx
.adx ~ looks like these are the file's scenarios, events, or scripts
.r00 ~ looks like these are the file's character models
.sdat ~ looks like this is the file's sound data

If you are wondering about the bin files:
    - arm7.bin
    - arm9.bin
    - banner.bin
    - header.bin
    - y7.bin
    - y9.bin

    Update:

    (Thank you for this!)

What is interesting is that I can find little information on these files and I can find little details on their purpose. I am not a computer expert of the sort, that is for sure. If someone was willing to help out, that would be awesome! It would mean a lot to me and the community. If anyone is interested or they know something, please message me or send a reply here. All are welcome.

In the meantime, PhantomGhost told me about someone on Twitter who was working on the project so I shall try to contact them.

    Thanks guys!

While I was looking at the thread I posted above, I created a little "character guide" of sorts. Not sure if it is ACCURATE so please help me if it isn't. This won't go anywhere unless there is correct information.

On the other hand, I found out how to save the WHOLE text of the game into a bin file, which is handy-dandy. If you have DeSunME (or however it is spelled), load the rom (or any rom), go to Tools > View Memory.

Once you are there, you can see the game in real-time which is helpful because you see what goes to what if that makes sense.

I can elaborate more on this later. I need some sleep because it is 1:30 AM in the morning.

Anyway thanks guys! I'll post the file I made.

I apologize for any typos or anything. I am really sleepy. XD

Also, feel free to edit it and let me know! Also feel free to PM me!!!

    Thanks everyone!

I am making a list of all the parts needed for this project. All are welcome.

    Translators: PhantomGhost, Karen

    Hackers: Zorbnog, lolichan195

    Current Translations: https://geekyobsession.com/2018/12/26/vampire-knight-chapter-1/

^ Translations for chapter 1 are by Karen.

If you want to contribute in any way, please let me know. Thank you!

If you have figured something out, please let me know.

jjjewel tried solving this and figuring this out 10 years ago. Because it was 10 years ago, technology has advanced and I believe we can figure this project out. I will try to contact them and see if they can help out. (I know about their message.)

    Thank you everyone!

    Update:

As I was looking through the different bin files (in binary), I found some interesting stuff.

The fnt.bin file shows all of the .ahx files and the .r00 files too.

If anyone can make sense of this, let me know. I will try to figure this out in the meanwhile. Happy New Year everyone!

I contacted some people that might be able to help out. Apparently some Chinese group figured out the compression type and the font so if anyone has information on that, please post it here!!! It would be super helpful! I am going to try and toy around with the files and stuff. :D Wish me luck! If you have any questions, comments, etc. feel free to tell me!!!

No response from the people I contacted... I really hope there is someone, SOMEONE who is willing to help me. Heck, it would be awesome if someone did contact me. Maybe no one knows how to deal with this game? I don't know.

I don't want to be doubtful, I really don't. I guess all I can work on is the actual translation of the game with the help of my friends.

Thanks to those who have been supporting me. It means a lot. <3

I have been thinking about it and I think my plan should go like this:

    1) Get the game translated so that it is available to English speakers.

    2) Try to crack the game and use those translations.

Ah, also on the 7th, I go back to school which will SIGNIFICANTLY shrink my time to work. Rip.

    I won’t give up though!

    Ooh all the pretty colours.

    Anyway

    - arm7.bin
    - arm9.bin
fnt.bin is common to various ROM unpacking tools. Short for something like file name table. Likely of no relevance here.

arm7 in most commercial games is just a library binary. It runs on the ARM7 processor in the DS and is usually used to handle boring operations. Some homebrew differs here, and some people use them as injection points. To get an idea of how banal they are you can usually swap them with games from about the same time (or just before or after) and the game will run exactly as it did before, indeed the "ARM7 swap" was once a fix that allowed certain games to work before a user's given flash cart had been updated to support it.

arm9 then is the big boy. It contains the code that runs on the ARM9 processor which for most commercial games is everything that goes. It runs the game logic and everything else. Often they are augmented by so called overlays which are small sections of code the DS will fetch and stick in a given area of memory before another is dropped in, and another, and another as demanded, and yes multiple can be in at once depending upon what goes. Best coding practice would say there should not be text, graphics, audio, levels and such in the ARM9 or overlays but that means nothing and loads of games have examples of all of it in there.
If text is in there and needs to be translated it is a pain to handle compared to more conventional text in external files that better game devs will use. This primarily comes from things having to be the same size or smaller and padded out unless you can repoint in the binary, which is a pain compared to said external files. If you need extra space, don't fancy finding some in memory (there is a desmume build geared for it, and more conventionally an older build of dsatm did so called deadbeef padding which allows you to look at the memory during play and see what had not yet been used) and your game is a wifi game I tend to find a lot of error message codes are in the binary so provide you with extra space as wifi error codes are not so useful these days.

I have not knowingly seen .r00 files before (I assume they are not rar files), or at least they are not ringing a bell as far as being a known packing format (see something like NARC, or their compressed form CARC). However many devs would do custom formats so no great shocker there, indeed figuring out such things is probably the bread and butter of DS ROM hacking. Just because one is a model does not mean they all are.

Praise Jesus, someone who is a professional.

Thank you for this!!! I am REALLY unexperienced; an amateur at this. I find this fun and all, but not good at it.

I will keep this in mind when looking at the code.

If you are able to help me please do. I am a small pea in a big ocean.

This clears a lot of things too, which is fantastic, so thank you so much!!!!

Message me or reply with any questions!

    I'll get those translations too.

I got an update from lolichan195 and they said that they were confused by the game as well. She will continue to dig though! As for me, I will look in the original forum that posted something about this game and try to get as much information as possible. If you wish to help me out, please message me or reply here. Also, thank you for all your love and support!!!

    Well... one of my friends told me this was a lost cause. ;;

I am going to focus on translations so that even though it isn't in English, at least people can play it. (That makes no sense, Zorb.)

I am also going to focus on Kimi ni Todoke, which seems infinitely easier. If you have any suggestions or tips, please let me know.

    But,
this does not mean I will give up. I need to search for answers. :D

    Zorbnog out for now!~
