Researchers say they have found a way to detect and recognise human gestures based on how they affect wi-fi signals.

They suggest it could let users control home appliances with a wave of the hand while in any room of the house.

They say the WiSee system offers a "simpler, cheaper" alternative to Microsoft's camera-based Kinect and other specialist gesture sensors.

For a moment I thought Nintendo were involved lol. I can't see the Kinect ever really becoming the preferred way of gaming , just as I can't for the life of me imagine sat waving my arms around to interact with my kettle, unless my the finished coffee can float to me on wifi signals too. Wiiwillsee.

Right... so... the Kinect wasn't really all that responsive and accurate while using 3D laser-based depth sensors, an RGB camera and a set of system-side models playing the role of ragdolls to effectively simulate the movement of the user's body based on the readings from the sensors... and I'm supposed to believe that detecting vague fluctuations in WiFi signals is going to be a better solution. Okay. :)
