Hacking Updating from current state

I am trying to play others people in a game and I need to update to have the same version as them,. Of course it requires a firmware update. How do I update without losing anything. I just booted up my 3dsxl and it seems to have Luma3DS v.9.0. I haven't touched this is some . time so I am not up to date with everything.

You need to replace the boot.firm on your system with this one newer one, and then you can update the system firmware fine.

OK, first get Luma 9.1 from https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases,
then copy the boot.firm from the .7z file to where your current Luma3DS Boot.firm is on your sd card,
then you can update your 3DS.
