Hacking update to 4.1e

I have my wii chipped with original wii-key and i'm still on 3.1e just looking for some advice on the best way forward?
Should i update as i am or will i brick my wii or is the best policy to install homebrew and use this going forward to up and down grade?
Looking to play wii-sports island and the upcoming mario which i suspect i will need to be on this higher update.

If you have a modchip in the wii and you dont really care about homebrew, just update the console. It will not affect the modchip in any way.
