Just use TinyFormat to initialize your SysNAND without formatting your flashcard. Your old game folder should belong to EmuNAND after that, and games won't be erased from EmuNAND

if he has nnid set up in sysnand and wants to use it with emunand, yes tinyformat is a better choice
I usually suggest it in any case because it removes all risk of things on the SD card being accidentally deleted. He has emuNAND, and there's no real reason to stay on 4.x-8.x now. Most of guides include setting up menuhax so there's a big chance he is on 9.2 with menuhax set upok but if he does not have hax set up etc, it will be far more easier and faster going to system settings and formatting, without the sd card in the console

And IMO, booting console, getting to Homebrew Menu, booting TinyFormat and pressing Y is way faster than booting system settings etc.

although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support) -

@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.

If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.

and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
