Hardware Unable to read sd card

Hi hoping someone can help upgraded to the new 3ds xl yesterday and with it I bought a 16 gb micro sdhc card it keeps telling me unable to read card but Original works fine do I need to format it first it's a lexar

You need to format it in FAT32.
