My OCD forced me to reformat my drive using the manufacturer's tool.
Plugged it into the Wii u and was able to access the hdd using the storage management screen so at least that is fixed.
Next I installed tasm2 from the disc and it bored fine and I was still able to access the drive from the system menu.
Have been reinstalling games all day and so far so good

Also I backed up all of my saves using savemii and I'm glad I did because I just picked up a link amiibo for epona for $3 yay!
