Hey @usernametaken. The new microsd card came in with the adapter so I'm back at it again. Using the new microsd I'm basically starting over, and when I got to the part where I install devmenu I get an error message when I try to run it: An error has occurred, forcing the software to close. The system will now restart. (unsaved data may be lost.)

When you try to launch Devmenu right?
Make sure you launch either Pasta or Reinand (Sysnand mode) before trying to use it.

Yeah, i was in Pasta when running it. If I try to run it without Pasta it gives a different error saying I should go back and download from eShop again.

Alright, try launching it from Pasta / Reinand (sys) again. If it gives the same error > Go into Data Management > Nintendo 3DS > Software > Delete Devmenu > Ninjhax > FBI > Reinstall Devmenu > Pasta / Rei (sys) > Try again.

Edit: @iceedge if you're starting from scratch, use this.

Alright from scratch.

Copy paste everything to your mSD > CN > Scan Ninjhax > Pasta > Ninjhax > FBI > Devmenu > Pasta > Unwrap > Turn off > Turn on (to confirm it's there) > Turn off > mSd to computer & backup contents > Turn on > CN > Wipe save> Scan Gateway QR > Format Emunand > Turn off > mSD to computer > Copy everything back over > Turn on > CN > Wipe save > Ninjhax QR > Boot Reinand from here > Confirm Devmenu transfered.

If you have Devmenu on the emunand (You should by now) and want to unlink nands, now's the time.

Turn off > remove mSD > Turn on > Format Sysnand > Setup process > Turn off > insert mSD > CN > Ninjhax > FBI > Install Reinand ROP.
Now you should be able to boot into reinand using the profile exploit.

<_> Setting up CFW w/o Gateway Flashcarts is a pain in the ass.

Original Post has been updated.

  • Tut has been revised for those without a Gateway Flashcart. (There was an issue before where after unlinking nands, Devmenu would no longer be on Emunand)
  • Tut has been attached to the OP so it can be downloaded separately.
  • Latest versions of Reinand & FBI have been added. (Reinand can now boot into Sysnand with signatures patched by holding [ B ] at the splash screen as you press [Start], until the screen goes black) - Users with a JPN console were having an issue with ROP not being able to launch Reinand via the profile exploit. Version 1.4.12 has fixed this.
  • Added a Q&A to OP.

Once you have Devmenu on your Sysnand turn off the 3DS > entire mSD to computer > Reinsert mSD > Boot Gateway menu > Format Emunand > Turn off > Connect mSD to computer and copy everything back > Turn the system on > Check Emunand for Devmenu > Once it's confirmed that it's there > Turn off > Remove mSD > Turn on and format Sysnand one more time > Turn off after setup > insert mSD > reinstall ROP > Boot Emunand and you should be all set.

Thanks, I finally got it working! Following your steps worked flawlessly. I also understood better the process. I was doing wrong two things:
1) After my 1st try I forgot about repairing the "dbs" folder using Data Management, That´s why DevMenu was not being properly installed (the icon disappearing after 2 seconds)
2) I was formatting the emunand before having DevMenu installed; Hence, I was not creating a proper copy of the sysNand (if I understood the process correctly).

I think your new tutorial file has this sorted. Thanks again!

One other question please; if, let´s say, I want to upgrade my sd to one of a bigger size, what should I have to do to move/copy my emunand and games/saves to my new SD?

Thanks!

Download the Emunand Tool > Connect mSD to computer > Copy contents of mSD to computer > Backup Emunand > Remove mSD > Connect new mSD > Inject Emunand > Copy everything to new mSD.

@usernametaken how do I get devmenu/bbm or other tools on my sysnand after unlinking? I tried installing via FBI in sysnand by using ninjhax>pasta>FBI then installing CIAs, but I don't see them on the menu.

After unlinking you wiped the Sysnand, you need to make sure you have the dbs folder along with its two files in the Sysnands new ID'd folders > Go into Data Management to fix the dbs files > Install the title manager(s) > Launch Pasta or Reinand (Sys) > Unwrap them.

Oh, cool. It's there now :) Random question about GBA/DS games. I installed the AGB_FIRM cia on my sysnand per this thread: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-agb_firm-signature-patcher-gba-rom-converter.390313/

On another tut I saw that it says to install it on both emunand and sysnand. What's the best place to put any gba/ds games?

I'd keep it.

Hi man, sorry for "re-asking" about this XD but I've been reading these days (without much free time) and I don't understand one thing. As we talked before, I should keep my sky3ds (to run cubic ninja backup etc..) but, If I downgrade MSET, and install the exploit.. If I run a DS backup the exploit will be gone, but I just need a DS flashcart (I have DSTWO) to reinstall ROP and nothing else, or am I wrong with that? =/ I mean, I just should keep a DS flashcart right? just in case MSET would be updated I'll need cubic ninja again.

Thanks for all man! ^^

Yeah, if you have a NDS flashcart, then you can just use that to reinstall the ROP if you ever lose it.

Just a couple of questions before I commit to trying this, and here's some background info on my n3ds so far:
9.2J n3ds, sky3ds (CN) and gateway available, currently running PastaCFW with freemultipatcher for region free, using a mix of USA carts and USA/JPN cias (loaded on sysnand/sd).

1. I've been interested in getting emunand but never took the plunge since the process involves wiping sysnand. Has reinand come far in the scene where the MSET install process can still allow me to keep my sysnand only data such as streetpass miis, mii plaza, friend code, etc?

2. I really want to make a NNID to dl eshop titles but I'm not sure if that's something I should only do after I make emunand. Are there more info on linking NNIDs related to reinand/emunand in general?

3. Can emunands play same region carts? If I tried something like this can I play my USA carts assuming I install 9.5U? Is this install possible with reinand?

4. Lastly, is reinand portable to rxtools once rxtools gets a stable release? I've heard good things about its development and everyone is saying that rxtools is the go to CFW once its finished. If not, should I wait for rxtools instead?

Thanks for helping out!

Reinand is the best cfw for new 3ds. Very stable since the last release change the start button freezing by using another button combo now. And there is no need to change emunand region at all just use the same freemultipatcher and it will let you play out of region cartridges. Gauging from rxtools I remember a dev member left for cakes and said the coding needs fixing. So rxtools is my cfw for old models while reinand is very good so far for new models.

Setting up Emunand never required you to format the Sysnand. You'd only format the Sysnand if you wanted to unlink the Nands; you could also format the Emunand if you have a Gateway Red (Since you'd be able to install a title manager even after the wipe) Your data should be untouched depending on what you do. If you were to unlink the nands by formatting the Sysnand, the Emunand should maintain all of the data. If you were to unlink by formatting the Emunand, nothing from your Sys would transfer over to that.

You can only have 1 active NNID between the two nands (linked or unlinked) it's up to you which you'd want to use (I'd suggest the emunand if you were going to be using that, but having access on the e-shop has it's uses for Sysnand as well)

Yes the emunand will play games from your region, to play other regioned games with Reinand you'd use FreeMultiPatcher or NTR 3.0.cia. Switching Emunand region would require a donor 3DS, that's not something i've looked into, so you'll need to search for guides if that's something you wanted to do.

I don't know for sure if rxTools and Reinand use the same Emunand, but it's pretty likely. Reinand uses the same Emunand that Gateway uses, so if rxTools uses that as well, they would be interchangeable.

The reason for changing emunand region is because I was thinking I would use all my USA carts/cias with reinand emunand and keep my JPN cias on sysnand/sd to load with Pasta, to deal with the sysnand format problem. So I wouldn't need to lose any of my mii/streetpass/friend code data. Does that sound plausible?

Wow thanks for the quick reply!

If I don't unlink the nands then I'd have the unwrapping bug upon every launch into emunand right? I actually have that currently on Pasta with my out of region cias and it's keeping me from installing more. I heard that unlinking nands will also create a new nintendo3ds folder for emunand?

As for region change, I want to setup reinand only for my USA carts and cias and still keep using pasta to load my JPN cias on sysnand/sd. Essentially this way I will have 2 consoles in 1, each for playing different region games. Assuming I can acquire the secure_a file from somewhere for this to work...

Do you know if I can follow the region change guide substituting with reinand?

If that makes sense, I think I will link NNID to sysnand to play games from the japan estore. Should this be done before or after I make emunand?

Correct. Out of region cias will still have to be unwrapped each time with Reinand, since it doesn't have built in region free (you'll need to launch freemultipatcher or NTR each time you boot emunand).
Unlinking will create a new folder inside of the Nintendo 3DS folder, basically the emunands ID.

Just looking at the requirements section for the region change, yes. But i'm fairly sure that guide is outdated due to 3DNUS being no longer functional (Nintendo Removed the files it would pull from). I don't know how reliant on 3DNUS that guide is.

So long as you're not going to format the Sysnand, you can connect the NNID whenever you want. If you install the Mset exploit, you'll lose the ability to manage the NNID from the System Settings in Sysnand though. Mset downgrades System Settings to firmware 4.5s System Settings, which didn't have that function at the time (as well as the 3D stabalizer & mSD wifi).

But if you made the CIA in region free you don't have to unwrap. And it will show everytime without the close the lid workaround.
