Hopefully I'm on the right thread.

Ok, I have an old DS lite with pokémon HG and pokémon platinum. Both are roms (in a R4 flashcard) and both have savefiles with a lot of pokémon I'd like to transfer to real X/Y Sun/Moon cartridges since I'm planning on buying a 3DS with these games. Problem is, I don't know how to do it or don't know if it's even possible. I tried searching posts that would help me, but I ended up confused with some people saying it's impossible and others saying that it is possible or just found posts about pc emulators, which is not my case.

I read somewhere that I need a real Black/White cartridge to transfer pokemon into further generations. If thats the case, it won't be much of a problem since I'm already planning on spending a lot of money on the system and games anyway.

Note that all of my pokémon were captured and leveled up legitimately.

The "Pokémon Bank" and "Poké Transporter" downloads are the official means of transferring from official DS to 3ds games (also emulated 3ds versions of the older games to modern 3ds games). As far as I am aware nobody has hacked those or recreated homebrew versions that play nicely with flash carts.

If you do have original DS games then yeah just restore your flash cart save* to the equivalent game (you can't do a black save on platinum) and transfer on up via those tools.

*note if you are doing it via a DS flash cart like the R4 it and is one of the titles that came with a pokewalker you might need a specific save dumping tool to dump/restore saves to it ( https://projectpokemon.org/home/forums/topic/11330-a-tool-to-backup-hgss-saves/ ), or you to mod the cartridge ( https://gbatemp.net/threads/pokemon-soul-silver-sav-to-from-cartridge-success.215641/ ). Also some of the USB based PC save dumping tools do not support pokemon with the pokewalker directly. If you are doing it via a hacked 3ds it should be OK,

Alternatively there are ways to modify your saves for the 3ds titles as well as ways to modify DS saves. You could also use those to recreate (it should be drag and drop) your existing pokemon in newer games.

As well as that you could recreate your DS flash cart's pokemon on a different DS game you do have (in this case it would allow you to recreate pokemon that exist on say black 2 on a pearl save, or just black 2 to white 2) and transfer those on up via the legitimate means.

pkhex https://projectpokemon.org/home/files/file/1-pkhex/ is the main tool for all sorts of save editing these days.

PKSM ( https://github.com/BernardoGiordano/PKSM ) is a tool which works directly on a hacked 3ds but is slightly more limited in functionality.

Trying to think what you would have got about PC emulators in your searches. Most would use those for going from GBA games to DS games rather than to anything on the 3ds.

My DS lite is running my games through some sort of launcher with a FFXIII theme and I dont know how to restore my saves or anything like that (I'm new to all of this) I just want to transfer my pokémon from roms to real carts when I get a new 3DS which I'm not planning on hacking. I'd like to play online on X/Y Sun/Moon if possible. I'm still reading people who claim I need a real cartidge from B/W or B2/W2 in order to do this. I'm afraid of using a program that could make my pokemon illegal or something like that. I'm a total newcomer to this things so I apologize in advance for such stupid questions.

Thanks for your time.

you have 2 methods
save editing (when you get the 3ds you can softmod it and dump your x\y\moon\sun save and then edit in pc)

or the propper way intended way.
you can link the 2 ds consoles, with with a black\white (and i do believe black2\white2 as well) sadly this method requires a legit 4 gen game, since the 5th gen will use a download play program that verifies what cartridge is inserted in slot1
transfer the pokes to that black\white, and then with pokemon bank you can transfer them to your x\y and i do believe moon and sun as well

i believe you can also use a emulator, but since it requires the wifi, i am not sure if they developed that part enough to be allow you to do all this
the emulator method is pretty easy from gen3 to 4 tough... (load both games in desmume options for example)

you need, if you go trough the official methods
the problem is, general rule, the next gen game will look for a pokemon game inserted in the DS slot
you can pretty easily load a black\white game in a flashcart and use an official platinum cart, but not the other way around.
it has nothing to do with the pokemon being ilegal or legit, the thing is, the games are not programmed to interact with each other directly
to transfer a pokemon from gen 4 to a gen 5, you have to upload a program from your gen 5 console to the other console. (this being masked as a mini game and done in a building in the gen 5 game) this program looks for a pokemon cart inserted in the slot and if found, it manipulates the data in it...
if you have a flashcart plugged in, the program will not see a pokemon game inserted and will tell you to insert one..

Thank you so much to both of you for helping this noob. You managed to answer my questions. =)

New question: I didn't understand which game I must buy, gen 4 or gen 5 since some people said gen 5.
