Hi All
smile.gif

Gamecube newbie here. I would much appreciate any tips / advice on how to go about booting backups on my recently accuired Gamecube.

I basically am looking for a decent modchip to mod this console with that is still available for purchase from somewhere. I checked shoptemp but couldnt find anything for the GC.

I saw a chip called the Viper GC Extreme which looks good, but its out of stock absolutely everywhere! I also heard about streaming games over a network card, but that sounds hacky :/

So i plead for help from the community, does anybody know where i can find a decent modchip for the GC, which is still being sold?

Loveing you all in advance (because i loved you all anyway when you helped me with my DS and GBA some time back hehe)

Ok well just to update everyone (and for general information's sake) here's whats happened:

I ended up getting a qoob chip which has 6 wires to solder to the mainboard. I practised on an old PC mobo i didnt care about before starting the job, and also filed my iron to a point (i highly recommend using a pointed iron for this!) as some of the points are *tiny* (such as the 5V+ Red which connects to FIL4 (Fuse-In-Line4?)). Also, dab a bit of flux on the contact pads before tinning

Another thing that happened to me was the wires that attach to the IC under the heatsink (On the DOL-001) are liable to short out against the heatsink as once screwed back into place the gap is very small. I used some insulation tape over the top of the joints to prevent that.

I then pre-flashed the qoob to 1.3c BIOS, attached it to the harness connector and fired it up (haha ok the truth is i actually had one loose wire, fixed that, then it shorted against the heatsink lol, but got it eventually).

System booted up fine, originals read fine, but no backup disc's would read. Tweaked the laser pot. Original was 270 ohms, ended up knocking it down to 170 ohms. At 170 ohms it still wont touch the TDK 8cm DVD-R's i bought, but it is quite happy with full sized Intenso 16x DVD+R's. The disc's need to be burnt slow and be spotless though (i'll try some different media soon).

Can't speak for the other chips but the qoob isnt too bad

. I'm paranoid about dropping 100 ohms on the laser, but cheap spare cubes off ebay will sort that (a straight swapout, unlike the xenogc which attaches to the cd unit instead of the mobo). I'm also looking into booting off an SD card using the SD Media Launcher (might save my disc drive some life), but my order hasent arrived yet so... no data

Thats about it for now, thanks a lot to the community who help me and other noobs! Hope this helps anyone who's still thinking of modding a GC for the first time (The GC rocks, dont care *how* old it is

) and if anyone has any thoughts/comments/tips lemme know ^^.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
