If you read the End User License Agreement for Origin it states that by installing Origin you're giving EA the right to monitor your PC and to make a profile of you, including what programs you have installed (and whether you have any illegally downloaded material), what websites you use, etc., and that EA reserves the right to share or sell this information to third parties.

Origin EULAYou agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol 37683v1 Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. I already have Origin. Not that I want it, but The Sims 3 demands it.

Anyway, WTF? They can sell the information? That sounds illegal, even when apart of a contract.

And what information are they selling? It clearly says in a form that does not personally identify you. I suspect they are just building usage statistics.

Still doesn't give them the right to spy and collect data outside of Origin.

Personally or not, I don't like it.

So many programs collect usage statistics. The first paragraph in this article is just an interpretation of the EULA (it's not what it actually says and they are just speculating).

Uhh, you do realize you're contradicting yourself right? Steam collects loads of data ranging from the specifications of peoples computers and networks to the programs people use, if you're saying that EA doesn't have the right to 'spy' and collect data outside of Origin, what gives Valve the right to do so with Steam? You've posted two EULA's from Valve and EA (in regards to Steam and Origin) which are pretty much identical, both stating that they will collect data, and both stating that they reserve the right to transmit and distribute said information with no personal identification.

I'm sorry, but this is perhaps the silliest thing I've seen all week, did you even read what you were posting? Take a little peek at the picture below.

Steam collects data all the time, how else would they have data on the player base with system specs.

They have a survey that pops up every now and again that collects your data, but they always ask for confirmation before they send the data and at that point you can just cancel it.

TL;DRSteam doesn't collect data outside the application except for that survey.

So really, anything you do on their severs is collected which happens pretty much everywhere while Origin collects data outside of the application.

Actually, Steam does collect information on what applications are installed through the above mentioned survey, but they do not force you to complete the survey and send the data to them.

    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.

the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze

    so..... yeah

we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
