I've never been really interested in the Uncharted series as I'm not that big a fan of shooters, but after hearing all these reviews saying that the third game is amazing, I've decided to change my mind.
My main concern however, is whether or not the previous two games are neccesary to understand the story. Will I be able to get by not knowing what happened in the last two games?

all 3 games continue onto each other, however you can buy the official limited edition guide, that will give you a summary of the previous two games to catch you up.

I would suggest buying the other two games, a combipack was released not too long ago so it should be cheap to pick up now.

reading about it is not the same as playing it.
Uncharted is a game that needs to be played.

You can play Uncharted games without any previous knowledge of the story as the stories are mediocre. I would recommend it to completely understand the character relationships though. I suggest borrowing Uncharted 2 as the campaign is just excellent and see if you like it or just go the combipack Prowler recommended.
