Funny enough for rom hacks I seem to do this but in more subversive ways the OG games I never renamed any pokemon except the starter cause it was the only one I ever kept and the usual names were pretty normalish like torchic was KFC.

Thinking of games with no saving function at all – three lives, no continues.
If you don't use an existing save function… well deserved.

I do have to say: Late 1990s, early 2000s games will give you different trouble (and I've seen enough of it last year): He is using a computer with a widescreen monitor already suggesting the PC is fairly new. Have fun with blacklisted secdrv.sys, bluescreens due to acedrvXX.sys or a – if not automatically blocked – totally shot Windows installation thanks to StarForce. (Or gather some cracked main executable files instead – on the other hand, the installation routine of some games will wreak havoc before ever starting the main game)
