Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

fhwyjbd.png

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

Hey guys, out of no where today I started having issues after shutting my switch down and putting my SD card into my PC to back some stuff up. Went to reboot my switch and now atmosphere is crashing on launch saying 420000000007E51A is the reason. I have deleted this folder from contents and atmosphere does boot, however then I cannot use any overlays. I have tried redownloading ovlloader and copying it over to my microsd again and still crashes on boot, any idea what is going on?

Emunand is on 14.0 and atmosphere is on latest version. This was working perfectly fine forever up until I rebooted my switch today.

Run a disk scan/repair on the SD card?

With a blank SD unzip these into the root
https://github.com/Atmosphere-NX/Atmosphere/releases/latest
https://github.com/WerWolv/Tesla-Menu/releases/tag/v1.2.0
https://github.com/WerWolv/nx-ovlloader/releases/tag/v1.0.6
inject fusee
Everything should now works perfectly or you may have problems with your hardware

If you want to preserve the contents on your sd just rename atmosphere and switch directory to something like atmosphere1 and switch1, unzip the three above into the root and inject fusee ( to avoid problem caused by your hekate setup )

I renamed these folders and started from scratch and seem to have it back up and running and slowly moved overlays over until they were all back. I believe the issue was I had an out of date status monitor overlay, however I am not sure how that got put on there because everything was working perfectly fine prior to shutting my switch down so I am not sure if I accidentally copied that over at some point but the status monitor overlay was from 2020 that I found in my switch folder. I deleted this as well as a couple other old overlays I don't use anymore and it seems to be back up and was able to move all my other contents back over. Just weird how this happened completely out of no where, I don't believe I changed or copied anything else over to the switch but it seems to be working again now which is all that matters.

If your internet speeds are fast enough. Streaming 4k takes alot. I used to only have 20mb sec, and 4k struggled. Now I have 300mb sec and 4k plays fine.

Did you feed the hamster in your internet router? It prob died and is running slow now.

@BigOnYa, why did you start saying my pc has a hamster in the first place?

I think Game streaming should work like this.... Local Hardware able the run the game fine, game engine and common assets stored locally, all FMV and music and textures could be streaming

Or free government supplied high speed internet be nice also. Like Obama care. Xdqwerty that's cool, its time consuming but rewarding once done or playable, to see what you've made from scratch. Animations take forever, but worth it.

    @BigOnYa,
and the visual aspect of the game is quite crude (the sprite that looks best is that of the protagonist just because he is a stickman with sunglasses)

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
There is a bullets behaviour you assign to your character, that makes the code easier, under "behaviours"
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
i meant that when the character is pointing to the right, the bullets spawn where they should, but when he is on the right, they move to the right but the spawn point is incorrect
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Itch.io has lots of free assets also. Under the bullets behavior tab, there is a "rotate bullets" option, can try that. Or in the code can try
    - fire bullet Player.X(PlayerDirection)

That's cool tho, I'm proud of you going back to it, not giving up. It is difficult at first to learn, but fun once you get the hang of it. I think I've watched every tutorial video there is, but I still struggle sometimes to get stuff to work right. But gotta keep trying dif things, and eventually you will get it right.
